Leonardo DiCaprio vs Timothée Chalamet: Who Will Win Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars?

Leonardo DiCaprio vs Timothée Chalamet: Who Will Win Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars?

Both actors delivered standout performances this year, making the Best Actor race at the 2026 Oscars one of the most talked-about categories heading into awards season.

The Best Actor race at the 98th Academy Awards could come down to two of the biggest names in Hollywood: Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet. With DiCaprio delivering a powerful performance in One Battle After Another and Chalamet earning major praise for Marty Supreme, the 2026 Oscars Best Actor category is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years. So who has the edge going into Oscar night?

Leonardo DiCaprio has had an illustrious four-decade career in the movie industry and is rightfully known as one of the greatest actors of all time. Having worked with many of the biggest directors in Hollywood, DiCaprio has become a brand in his own right, effortlessly elevating almost every project he appears in. One Battle After Another, the 2025 immigration drama nominated for a whopping 13 awards, is DiCaprio’s first collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who himself has been a clear Academy favourite every time he releases a movie.

OBAA sees DiCaprio play the anarchist Bob, whose entanglement with a black revolutionary, Perfidia Beverly Hills, severely upends his life. Hunted across the country by semi-government militias enforcing torture and deportation of minorities, Bob is forced to rely on an unlikely group of allies to save his daughter from the clutches of the nefarious Colonel Lockjaw. DiCaprio is at the top of his form in OBAA, giving a nuanced and, at times, quite emotional performance of a desperate father pushed to the brink to save his child. DiCaprio is famous for giving it his all in films, and OBAA shows how much of a talent he continues to be.

Timothée Chalamet, the 30-year-old French-American, has quickly risen up the ranks to become one of the most sought-after young actors in memory. Breaking onto the scene with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar 12 years ago, Chalamet has gone from high to high, excelling in everything from period dramas to science fiction blockbusters. In Marty Supreme, Chalamet plays a table tennis perfectionist who goes to hell and back to achieve his dreams. It is 1952, and hardly anyone takes table tennis seriously except Marty, who thinks whoever manages to excel in this sport will walk away with both glory and considerable riches.

Playing the wide-eyed and charismatic wunderkid, Marty is Chalamet’s juiciest role yet. The Safdie brothers are known for their high-energy, high-anxiety films, and Marty Supreme takes this up a notch, delivering a pulse-pounding drama that is less about the sport and more about Marty and his ability to go all in. Marty Supreme not only manages to subvert expectations effectively, but it also showcases the exploits of a man willing to do anything and burn every bridge to attain what he thinks is success.

DiCaprio vs Chalamet: Which Performance Is Stronger?

So, on one hand, we have a measured performance from a veteran film star in a movie that is rarely full of surprises (OBAA). On the other hand is a completely unhinged performance in a frenetic film that basically shows what happens to a person’s life when they combine grit and greed. So, what is the better performance, and who might get the Oscar? On a purely objective basis, Timothée Chalamet gives a better performance than DiCaprio here. We say this about his performance being more memorable of the two (now that quite a few weeks have passed since we last saw both movies).

We also say Chalamet on the basis of the intensity of a few key moments from both films. Another way of stating this is that we have come to expect greatness from every DiCaprio performance, but Chalamet’s foray here is something not quite seen from him yet. We know DiCaprio always gives it his all, but this is the first time we have seen Chalamet go down this road.

Thus, even though we (and most other analysts) think that Chalamet should come out on top, this is no guarantee of his actually winning. As per the rules of the Academy, the winner is chosen by the total tally of votes in support of each performance; more Academy members choosing DiCaprio over Chalamet would result in DiCaprio getting the Oscar. There is no complex science to this; Academy members vote on the basis of their bias, their leanings, and their subjective opinions. So what actually ends up happening is hard to predict beforehand.

What does the past say about this clash?

Diving into a little data, if past nominations are to be considered, it is clear that DiCaprio is the clear favourite. He has been nominated for Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor a whopping 7 times, of which he won once for The Revenant. Chalamet, on the other hand, has four nominations and no wins. The balance is clearly in favour of DiCaprio, and since most Academy voters are older, they are more likely to identify with DiCaprio than with Chalamet.

However, the sheer number of past nominations (and wins) is no indication of the future. It can be argued that since Chalamet is twenty years younger than DiCaprio, he might end up getting more nominations (and wins) than DiCaprio by the time he reaches 50.

While both performances have earned widespread acclaim, Timothée Chalamet currently appears to have the momentum heading into the Best Actor race at the 2026 Oscars. His performance in Marty Supreme is more explosive and transformative, which often resonates strongly with Academy voters.

However, Leonardo DiCaprio remains a formidable competitor, especially given his long-standing reputation with the Academy and the strong awards push behind One Battle After Another.

If momentum continues to build, Chalamet could secure his first Oscar, but this race remains extremely close.

Final Words

So, Leonardo DiCaprio vs. Timothée Chalamet: who will win Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars? Based on the sheer intensity of the performances, Timothée Chalamet may have the edge this year. While DiCaprio delivers another strong and measured performance, Chalamet’s fearless transformation in Marty Supreme feels like the kind of role the Academy loves to reward. Still, with Oscar voting often unpredictable, we’ll have to wait until March 17 to see whether Leonardo DiCaprio or Timothée Chalamet walks away with the Best Actor Oscar.
