Is Doctor Strange 3 Happening?
Doctor Strange 3 currently has no official release date, nor any production schedule. As it stands, it doesn't even have any creative team attached, with previous helmer Sam Raimi and writer Michael Waldron reportedly not being asked back amid Marvel Studios and Cumberbatch's desire for a "fresh creative direction." This year's Marvel Studios Hall H presentation also omitted both Cumberbatch and any mention of Doctor Strange altogether. That may sound discouraging for Strange fans, but Marvel has never exactly been famous for laying all of its cards on the table. And although Cumberbatch isn't officially listed among the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, the actor himself has dropped what might be the most Marvel answer imaginable.
"I am in the next one," Cumberbatch told Business Insider when asked about Doctor Strange's status, before cheekily adding, "Don't ever believe anything I say."

That playful remark only deepened the mystery because it contradicted an earlier interview in which he claimed Doctor Strange would skip Doomsday while becoming "quite central to where things might go" in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Perhaps the confusion simply reflects how Marvel productions operate behind the scenes. The films are woven together so tightly that actors frequently shoot scenes for multiple projects without having the complete picture – just ask Gwyneth Paltrow.

Still, if Strange truly plays an instrumental role in the forthcoming Avengers films, fans unfamiliar with the comics may be in for quite a rude awakening. One of the biggest theories surrounding Avengers: Secret Wars suggests Doctor Strange could find himself allied with Doctor Doom in a desperate attempt to save what remains of the multiverse.

Marvel's upcoming Secret Wars film is expected to draw inspiration from Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic's acclaimed 2015 comic series. In that storyline, the Marvel multiverse collapses after repeated incursions destroy countless realities. Doctor Doom ultimately constructs Battleworld from the surviving fragments of existence, with Doctor Strange serving as his trusted adviser and lieutenant. Strange occupies an unusually complicated moral position throughout the story. He understands Doom's flaws, yet believes preserving whatever remains of reality is worth compromising his own ideals.
It makes for a fascinating role because Strange is neither a straightforward hero nor an outright villain. He becomes someone forced into impossible choices, which has always been where the character thrives. Even in the MCU, Stephen Strange has repeatedly chosen morally messy solutions if they offer the greatest chance of saving everyone else. Giving Thanos the Time Stone. Casting the memory spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Dreamwalking through a corpse. Allying with the supervillain for some greater purpose would be in the realm of possibility for the extremely pragmatic Strange.

Of course, comic readers also know another uncomfortable possibility.
If Marvel follows Hickman's Secret Wars with reasonable faithfulness, Doctor Strange's journey reaches a heartbreaking conclusion. After serving Doom, Strange eventually turns against him, sacrificing himself at the eleventh hour in an attempt to stop his former ally. Heroic? Absolutely. Great for emotional stakes? Definitely.
Great news for Doctor Strange 3? Well... not exactly.
Rumors suggesting Marvel could borrow that storyline naturally raise questions about the fate of a third solo movie. After all, it becomes rather difficult to headline your own sequel if you've heroically exited the mortal plane.
Then again, this is Marvel, where death has rarely been permanent for its biggest heroes.

Kevin Feige himself has previously described Doctor Strange as "the anchor of the MCU," a remark that speaks volumes about the character's long-term importance. That importance also extends beyond storytelling.

The original 2016 film grossed nearly $678 million worldwide despite introducing audiences to one of Marvel's stranger heroes. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness pushed that figure even higher, earning more than $955 million globally. Doctor Strange also occupies a unique position within Marvel's expanding universe. Characters like Spider-Man and Captain America naturally anchor stories rooted on Earth. Thor ventures into cosmic mythology. Strange, meanwhile, can travel almost anywhere. Magic, alternate realities, supernatural threats, mystical dimensions and multiversal catastrophes all comfortably fit within his corner of the MCU. He arguably offers Marvel more storytelling flexibility than almost any other established hero.
That versatility makes it easy to imagine a third film heading in several directions once Secret Wars concludes. The unresolved ending of Multiverse of Madness already handed Marvel an intriguing starting point. Clea's arrival and the mention of an Incursion teased a much larger crisis waiting beyond Earth's reality. Fans have spent the last few years wondering what exactly happened after Strange stepped into the Dark Dimension. Marvel simply hasn't answered the question yet.

Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism comes directly from Cumberbatch himself.
Rather than sounding finished with the role, the actor has repeatedly spoken about wanting to continue shaping Strange's future.

What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? He's a very rich character to play. He's a complex, contradictory, troubled human who's got these extraordinary abilities, so there's potent stuff to mess about with."
That hardly sounds like someone preparing to hang up the Cloak of Levitation.

Doctor Strange 3 may currently exist as little more than rumors and educated guesses.
