Obsession 2: Will It Happen? Release Date, Cast & Everything We Know

Obsession became one of the biggest surprise box office hits in recent years, grossing more than $442 million worldwide against a reported budget of just $750,000. Naturally, fans are already asking one question: will there be an Obsession 2?

Is Obsession 2 Happening?

Obsession 2 has not been officially announced, but Curry Barker has revealed plans to expand the Obsession universe in a different way. Here's everything we know about the potential sequel, release date, cast, and the filmmaker's future horror projects.

As things stand, if you're hoping to see Obsession 2 anytime soon, you may need to find a One Wish Willow first.

Why Hasn't Obsession 2 Been Announced?

Michael Johnston, who played Bear in the movie, has come out and confirmed that there is currently no plan for Obsession 2. Speaking to People, the actor tempered fans' expectations while still leaving the door unlocked.

“Look, it’s a magical world. Anything can happen. I would love that,” Johnston said. “I will say, there’s no plan for that. Also, I don’t know how many people would want Bear back. I think the general consensus is that he kind of got what he deserved.”

Given how Obsession ends, he may have a point.

What Has Curry Barker Said About Obsession 2?

While Obsession 2 isn't currently in development, there is an important caveat. We may not be getting a direct sequel. We may not be getting a direct sequel to the story of Bear and Nikki (well, mostly Nikki if the ending is anything to go by), but while that chapter appears to be over, Curry Barker has repeatedly made it clear that he has no intention of abandoning the world he created.

In fact, Barker isn't done exploring the Obsession cinematic universe at all.

What Is Anything But Ghosts?

The 26-year-old filmmaker has already lined up his next feature, Anything But Ghosts. Like Obsession, it falls under the horror banner and takes place in the same universe. However, it reportedly has nothing to do with the cursed wish-granting widget that turned Bear's romantic fantasy into an absolute nightmare.

Instead, Anything But Ghosts revolves around two fake paranormal investigators who suddenly find themselves dealing with actual ghosts. The premise shifts toward horror comedy, with Barker starring alongside Cooper Tomlinson, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul are attached to the cast as well. It sounds like a completely different flavor of horror, yet it still occupies the same fictional playground. That decision alone says plenty about Barker's ambitions. Rather than stretching the original story past its natural ending, he appears more interested in expanding the boundaries of the universe itself.

Expanding the Obsession universe has actually been part of Barker's vision for quite some time.

Rather than making a traditional Obsession 2, Barker has repeatedly spoken about turning the franchise into an anthology. Each film would introduce new characters whose lives are changed forever after making a wish using the mysterious One Wish Willow. It is an elegant concept because the central mythology can be transplanted into almost any setting imaginable.

What Could Obsession 2 Be About?

One thing is clear, though: Barker clearly has zero interest in revisiting his beloved creation for the sake of it.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker reassured listeners that any continuation would have to earn its existence. He emphasized that he has no desire to make a cheap cash grab and believes the premise itself still has plenty of creative potential waiting to be explored. That distinction matters. Plenty of horror franchises eventually fall into the trap of chasing diminishing returns, recycling familiar faces and familiar scares until audiences stop caring. Barker's comments suggest he would rather build outward than circle back.

Why Did Obsession Become Such a Huge Hit?

Considering how well the original premise worked, it is easy to understand why.

Obsession follows a young store clerk named Bear who buys a wish-granting willow and uses it to make his crush Nikki love him back. To Bear's amazement, it works. Before long, however, he realizes that every wish comes attached to a horrifying consequence. What begins as an awkward romantic fantasy gradually mutates into a nightmare fueled by obsession, manipulation, and guilt.

That deceptively simple premise became the foundation for a bonkers horror thriller packed with gore and increasingly nightmarish chaos rooted in a grounded horror everyone can relate to: modern dating.

The result struck a nerve with audiences around the world.

Online, the movie launched a robust and persistent discourse around toxic relationships, consent, and power imbalance. Viewers debated Bear's decisions, sympathized with Nikki's situation and argued over the moral implications of the supernatural curse. Horror films rarely become conversation starters outside genre circles, yet Obsession somehow crossed into mainstream discussion. People were talking about its scares one minute and its social themes the next.

That broad appeal partly explains why the film became such a phenomenon.

It remains genuinely astonishing that a movie produced for under $1 million managed to compete against Star Wars and superhero spectacles. Hollywood spends enormous sums trying to manufacture breakout franchises every year. Barker managed to stumble into one with pocket change by studio standards. The film became the definition of a word-of-mouth success story, attracting audiences who simply wanted to know what everyone else could not stop talking about.

When Could Obsession 2 Be Released?

Unless plans change, Obsession 2 is unlikely to begin production before Anything, But Ghosts is completed. Even if Barker decides to return immediately afterward, a release before late 2027 or 2028 appears unlikely. At the moment, however, no official timeline has been announced.

There is currently no official release date for Obsession 2.

Curry Barker is currently focused on Anything But Ghosts, making a direct sequel unlikely in the immediate future. However, Barker has repeatedly expressed his desire to continue expanding the Obsession universe, suggesting that while Obsession 2 isn't in active development, future stories set within the same world remain very much on the table.

Why Obsession Doesn't Need a Traditional Sequel

Naturally, that kind of success raises another question. Can lightning strike twice for the budding franchise? It doesn't take a One Wish Willow to be hopeful.

Barker has already demonstrated that he knows how to make dirt-cheap movies look anything but. Just as importantly, the wish-granting plot device is remarkably flexible. A cursed object that grants desires while twisting them into nightmares can be dropped into countless situations. Teenagers. Families. Married couples. Co-workers. Complete strangers. Every new protagonist brings a different emotional dilemma before the horror even begins. That flexibility is precisely why Barker’s anthology idea feels so promising. The mythology stays familiar while the stories remain fresh.

Horror history offers plenty of evidence that audiences are happy to revisit a compelling concept when each chapter has something new to say. Obsession’s production company, Blumhouse, has built an entire business around that philosophy. Under its watch, franchises like Insidious and The Purge continued evolving by introducing fresh characters while expanding their respective worlds. And who could forget Paranormal Activity, the microbudgeted supernatural thriller turned long-running series that arguably started the modern horror blueprint.

Obsession already possesses the ingredients needed for that kind of longevity. The mythology is simple enough for newcomers to grasp immediately, yet broad enough to support entirely different stories without feeling repetitive. Barker himself appears aware of that balance, which perhaps explains why he has resisted the temptation to rush into Obsession 2 simply because audiences are asking for one.

Ultimately, Obsession 2 may not arrive in the form fans expect, but Curry Barker has made it clear that the universe is far from over. Whether through a direct sequel or an anthology of interconnected stories, there's still plenty of nightmare fuel left inside the mysterious One Wish Willow.
