Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 are both scheduled to release on December 18, 2026, setting up one of the biggest blockbuster clashes in modern movie history. With Marvel aiming for a comeback and Dennis Villeneuve closing out the Dune trilogy, the showdown could dominate the holiday box office — and even spark a new “Barbenheimer”-style cultural moment.
Will Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 release on the same day?
Yes. Both films are currently scheduled for December 18, 2026, setting up one of the biggest blockbuster clashes in years. Studios may still shift dates, but if both hold, the showdown could mirror the Barbenheimer box office phenomenon.

Why Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 Chose the Same Release Date
The holiday box office window, starting from the end of November around Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve, has always been a lucrative time slot for theatrical films. Taking advantage of the holidays and the increased spending linked to both Thanksgiving and Christmas, crowd-pleasing blockbusters generally have an easier time in this window. Taking these factors into consideration, it is no surprise that both Disney (the studio behind Doomsday) and Warner Bros (the studio behind Dune 3) decided to open their biggest films of the year on this date.
It is not unheard of in the industry that two gigantic blockbusters are booked on the same day. When this ends up happening, one of the films relents and usually moves to another date a few weeks before or after the original date. However, both Disney and Warner Bros. are constrained here. Doomsday has already been delayed several times (it was first slated to come out in 2023), and Dune 3 is the final Denis Villeneuve-directed film (Villeneuve has to direct Bond next and thus cannot afford for Dune 3 to be delayed even a few weeks). So both Warners and Disney are in a bind, and there are only two options here: either both films release on the same day and cannibalize each other, or one film moves a week ahead of the other. Delaying either of the films past December 18 is not an option.

Could ‘Dunesday’ Become the Next Barbenheimer?
However, there is a silver lining here, as shown by the 2023 phenomenon of Barbenheimer. On 21 July 2023, two of that year’s biggest movies, Christopher Nolan’s R-rated atomic bomb drama Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s live-action adaptation of Barbie, opened on the same day and set the box office on fire. Counterprogramming was key here; both films were catering to different demographics but general audiences got swept up in the moment and ended up watching both. The results were astounding; people were coming to cinemas dressed as characters from the two flicks, and it became a cultural moment to post pictures of attending the screening of both. Even Tom Cruise and other celebrities chimed in on the Barbenheimer phenomenon, and as a result, everyone benefited from this rare moment in cinematic history.
The Barbenheimer effect wasn't lost on Disney and Warner Bros., the studios behind Doomsday and Dune 3. Although the two studios are the biggest in the industry, they both absolutely need their films to overperform; a recent box office slump, coupled with difficult economic headwinds ahead, means every dollar here is essential. As the release date dawns closer, both studios are absolutely keen to replicate the Barbenheimer phenomenon this year as well. In a bit of a cheeky nod to this, stars from both films have already started referring to the date of combined release as ‘Dunesday’. Memes, referring to Dunesday, have already been a part of the Twittersphere for the past few months.

The release date of 18 December is also a bit of an odd pick for both studios. No Avengers film has ever been released in the Christmas period before; each of the four Avengers movies has only been released in April and May at the start of the summer season. In choosing the Christmas slot this time, Disney might be trying to replicate the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home here; the multiversal epic released on December 17, and pent-up fan demand meant that it was a massive success. Dune, on the other hand, has had no fixed release window. Part 1 opened during COVID in October 2021, while Part 2was released in March 2024. The audience's interest in Part 3 is through the roof, and thus Dune 3 stands to make money wherever on the calendar it is released.
While hoping and praying for a repeat of Barbenheimer is well and good, there is one key factor preventing it. This factor is the lack of counterprogramming in the two offerings; Oppenheimer was an R-rated political drama, while Barbie was a PG story about a doll who becomes self-aware. The two films could not be more different, and thus, it made perfect sense when audiences combined the two into a double feature. In the case of Dunesday, both Doomsday and Dune 3 are catering to the same demographic (both are PG-13 films marketed to young guys). People who go to watch one film will absolutely go watch the other as well, without any push by marketing. So it remains to be seen if the Dunesday effect will have the same results as Barbenheimer.

Which Movie Needs to Win the Box Office More?
Marvel remains a box office powerhouse, but the franchise has struggled with inconsistent performance since 2021. In this time period, one Marvel film has outright bombed while five others have massively underperformed. So, Avengers Doomsday needs to succeed in reversing this downtrend, and if it fails to do so, we might as well write the obituary for the Marvel brand itself. Dune, on the other hand, has been a success by any metric, and thus, any decent amount of money made by the final part will do.
Which movie will win: Avengers Doomsday or Dune 3?
It’s too early to call, but Avengers: Doomsday likely has the broader global audience, while Dune 3 may dominate critical reception and premium formats like IMAX. If both are released on the same day, the real winner could be the box office itself.
