Fresh off the success of his last Marvel film, Deadpool and Wolverine, which managed to gross more than 1.3 billion dollars, creative powerhouse Ryan Reynolds is developing a new Marvel X-Men movie centered around the character Deadpool.

Reynolds is well-acquainted with Marvel films, having first appeared as Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity (2005), during the period when the rights to Blade were held by New Line Cinema. He then played the widely maligned first iteration of Wade Wilson in X Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). With his mouth sewn shut and pigmented laser eyes, this version of Deadpool was met with widespread disdain and scorn. Determined to correct the wrongs, Reynolds spent the next several years perfecting his Deadpool reboot, ultimately releasing it in 2016 to stratospheric box office success and critical acclaim.

A sequel, aptly titled Deadpool 2, followed soon after which became an even bigger hit. However, Reynolds’ plans to complete the trilogy would hit a snag when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its X-Men film rights. The next five years would see Disney struggle to greenlight a Deadpool sequel, fearing its R-rated content might not be right for the brand.

However, Reynolds had a trick up his sleeve. Marvel and Reynolds have successfully resurrected Hugh Jackman for a new Deadpool sequel, entitled Deadpool and Wolverine. This film achieved remarkable success, setting a record as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. In light of this, it was only natural that Reynolds would return to Deadpool, even though he repeatedly said that there should be a strong reason to do so.

It appears that the reason has been found. The upcoming film that Reynolds is producing is reported to be a collaborative project featuring Deadpool alongside several members of the X-Men. This new film would be separate to another new X-Men film announced by Marvel recently, the one which is being directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*). Throughout all of Ryan's prior Deadpool movies, the X-Men have made appearances in various forms. The first Deadpool starred Colossus and a couple of other C-list mutants while the second one had Juggernaut and all of the young X-Men (Xavier, Cyclops, Quicksilver, Nightcrawler and Storm) appearing in a brief cameo.

In contrast, Deadpool and Wolverine were the most X-Men heavy films, featuring the original trilogy’s Sabretooth and Pyro as well as variants of most other X-Men characters. Cassandra Nova, Charles Xavier’s sister, was introduced for the first time, and Hugh Jackman returned to play Wolverine for the 10th time.

No casting announcements have yet been made for Reynolds’ idea, except for the obvious fact that Reynolds will return as Deadpool. According to sources, Reynolds will star in the film but will not be the lead in it. Rather, he would be part of an ensemble composed of three or four other X-Men. Whether this is X-Force remains to be seen, as a comedic twist on the X-Force was already a major arc of Deadpool 2.

The new film has not yet been pitched to Marvel head Kevin Feige, with Reynolds determined to have a story and a treatment in mind before he moves forward. It is certain that Fiege would be highly interested in the idea, as the last Fiege-Reynolds collaboration netted more than a billion dollars. Keeping in mind the early days of this idea, fans should not expect the film to release before 202,8 as Marvel has its slate mapped out till 2027. There is a slim chance that Deadpool might even appear in the next Avengers film, as several X-Men are already part of that film.
