The Batman Part 2 is officially on the way, with director Matt Reeves preparing the sequel for a planned 2027 release.
After multiple delays and DC Universe shakeups, new details about the release date, cast, and story are starting to take shape.
Here’s everything we know so far—and what it means for the future of Gotham.

Will there be The Batman Part 2?
Yes — The Batman Part 2 has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros., with Matt Reeves directing and Robert Pattinson returning in the titular role. The sequel is targeting an October 2027 release following script delays and DC restructuring.
Yet the decision to move forward with a sequel wasn’t entirely straightforward.
As the DC Cinematic Universe faltered and imploded in the 2020s, with multiple versions of Batman appearing across different projects — including Ben Affleck’s DCEU version, Michael Keaton’s return in The Flash, and Pattinson’s darker, standalone take, audiences were left with a fragmented vision of the character, creating uncertainty about the franchise’s future.
The one silver lining that made everyone hopeful was 2022’s The Batman. Originally envisioned as a Ben Affleck-directed take on the caped crusader, The Batman evolved into a standalone feature starring Robert Pattinson when Affleck hung up his cape.
The film was well received (with some calling it the second-best Batman film of all time) and made close to $800 million worldwide. Given its success in all metrics, a sequel should have been assured, but since Warner Bros. was in the middle of rebooting their DC cinematic universe, it appeared (for the time being) that standalone projects might face the axe.
With the previous DC universe losing momentum and a new one still taking shape, Warner Bros. ultimately chose to continue the one Batman story that was clearly working.
As a result, The Batman Part 2 was officially a go.

How The Batman Part 2 Fits Into James Gunn’s DC Universe
Despite the ongoing development of The Batman Part 2, there are currently two separate Batman projects in the works.
One of these is James Gunn’s Batman, a film he has been teasing since the DCU began its development in 2024. Initially announced as ‘Batman: Brave and the Bold’, this proposed film is to be directed by Andy Muschietti (who also made 2023’s The Flash).
In contrast, Robert Pattinson’s Batman remains part of a separate, standalone continuity often referred to as the “Elseworlds” slate.
It was initially considered that Brave and the Bold would be put on the back burner (to prevent a clash with Batman 2), but the Warner Bros brass forced James Gunn to bring forward the release date of the flick. It was then announced in early 2026t hat Christina Hodson (who also wrote Birds of Prey, The Flash, and the unreleased Batgirl film) will be penning this project.
Whatever ends up happening, this particular Batman film, that exists outside of the main DC Universe, is at least two years away.

The Batman Part 2 Release Date: When Will It Come Out?
The Batman Part 2 is officially scheduled for October 2027, after multiple delays from its original 2025 release. This marks one of DC’s most anticipated releases, following the success of the 2022 film.
Reeves has been hard at work writing the sequel for several years, with much of that time dedicated to refining the script. Reeves’ script has already been met with rave reviews from with the likes of Gunn and Colin Farrell commenting on its extraordinary quality.
During this time, the film was delayed multiple times from its original release date of 2025 to the current one of October 2027.
With James Gunn’s Superman sequel releasing in May 2027, the year 2027 makes for an exciting one-two punch for DC fans everywhere.

The Batman Part 2 Cast: Who Is Returning?
The Batman Part 2 will bring back several familiar faces from the first film.
Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader in Batman 2, and Andy Serkis is also expected to return as his butler Alfred Pennyworth. Also back in the mix is Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. Farrell’s Penguin had his own spinoff from 2022’s The Batman in the shape of the limited series ‘The Penguin’. Released in 2024, the series ran for one season, and it remains unclear if plot threads from that show would be a part of the sequel.
There have been reports that Scarlett Johansson is in negotiation to join the cast, potentially in a major role opposite Pattinson. Johansson is no stranger to comic book films, having already played Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the MCU. Johansson is rumored to either play Harvey Dent’s wife if the film follows The Long Halloween Storyline, or Andrea Beaumont if Mask of the Phantasm is chosen to be the inspiration for the film.
At the time of writing, casting decision have not been officially announced, but with 2027 fast approaching, you can bet Gotham won’t have to wait long before the full lineup.

Which Villains Will Appear in The Batman Part 2?
Here is where it gets interesting.
Although the 2022 film was filled to the brim with classic Batman villains, perhaps the greatest of them all was released through a deleted scene. Yes, we are talking about Barry Keoghan’s Joker, who stole every second of the three-minute scene that he was in. He will surely make an appearance in The Batman 2 and is sure to cause much more mayhem in Bruce Wayne’s life.
In addition to this exciting piece of news, the casting really kicked into high gear when Reeves announced that Marvel alum Sebastian Stan would also be a part of the film. Famous for playing the Winter Soldier for more than a decade in the MCU, Stan was rumored to be angling for Harvey Dent, although such rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt.
Several reputed publications later confirmed that Stan was indeed playing the Gotham lawyer who turns to the dark side after having half his face disfigured.
