New Stargate series
Stargate has its origins in the 1994 film of the same name by Roland Emmerich. The film was a success, but in the face of repeated failures to develop its sequel, the minds behind the film turned to TV instead. Three different TV series were commissioned, and each ran for several seasons between 1997 and 2011. While its peers dominated the theatrical film landscape, Stargate instead took over TV and was a significant cultural phenomenon in the 90s and the 2000s. As Star Wars and Star Trek were rebooted for the big screen once more in the 2010s, Stargate fell a little bit into irrelevance.

Will the New Stargate Series Be on Amazon Prime?
However, the franchise had a new lease on life when Amazon acquired the entire MGM studio in 2022. Hoping to break into film and TV with their new investment, Amazon set about exploring the future potential of the MGM library to develop future installments. One of the most lucrative in this regard was found to be Stargate; the franchise already had a rich history on the big and small screen, and its enduring fanbase meant low risk. In November 2025, it officially announced that more Stargate was on the way, with a new series debuting sometime in the next three years.

New Stargate Series Cast: Which Characters Could Return?
Amazon wants to get Stargate right, both to placate existing fans and to ensure the new series ends up running for multiple seasons. Thus, they settled on Martin Gero as the showrunner of this as-yet untitled series. Eagled-eyed fans would remember Gero as a franchise veteran with writing credits on all three live-action Stargate series. Gero’s placement as the head honcho means previous iterations will be respected, and the new series will fit perfectly with the existing canon. With a writers’ room being assembled in January 2026, Gero said a few days ago that production is expected to last around two years. This tentative deadline could very well be extended further.

If Gero’s inclusion was a confidence boost, further goodwill was lent to the project when it was announced that Brad Wright, co-creator of the prior series, and Joe Mallozzi, long-time Executive Producer on the franchise, would also be returning in contributing producer roles. In addition, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who created the 1994 film, are also back as executive producers as well. While few details are currently known about the series and its setting, it will not be a reboot and new viewers will still be able to tap into the story despite the complex backstories.
Is the New Stargate a Reboot or Sequel?
The new Stargate series, being a sequel/continuation of what came before as opposed to a completely new reboot, is a good thing. Hard reboots of legacy franchises don't always work, as existing fans have a particular image in mind of their favourite project, and they are far less likely to be receptive to the new thing. Continuing the previous story also means existing fans of the franchise will have no problem tuning into the new series, as they already know what has transpired before.

Why Now Is the Perfect Time for a New Stargate Series
There has been no new Stargate series since Stargate: Universe ended in 2011. With 15 years now passing since the last episode of Stargate Universe aired, it seems it is the perfect time to revisit this iconic franchise once more. Another important point to note here is that Stargate’s two main rivals today, Star Wars and Star Trek, have both been relegated to television after years of bad decisions by their respective owners.
Star Wars, widely considered to be the most famous space opera franchise in history, saw its latest film trilogy received with disdain and scorn by fans. Then, a complete box office failure of a Han Solo spinoff film spooked Disney so much that they refused to make any new Star Wars film in cinemas for the next 6 years. After this 6-year hiatus, a new Star Wars film is slated to release this year, but the odds of its success are not looking good.

A similar thing has happened to Star Trek as well. After the failure of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, repeated attempts to get a new Star Trek film off the ground have ended in failure to date. In the meantime, Paramount continues to develop and release a plethora of Star Trek TV shows with increasingly campy quality. As of this moment, there seems to be no hope for Star Trek as well.
Could Stargate Become Amazon’s Next Big Sci-Fi Franchise?
With audiences mostly disappointed by the current offerings of both Star Trek and Star Wars, Stargate is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity. If the makers of the new show are able to create a season that is narratively and visually strong, not only can it attract a significant number of fans from around the world, but it can propel the previous shows in the Stargate universe into the public discourse quite easily. Audiences are craving good science fiction content, and a new, well-made Stargate show can do just that.

Thus, all eyes remain on this new Stargate property to see how it will turn out. Obviously, Amazon would want it to run for several seasons, and since it is one of the biggest companies in the world, financing Stargate is no problem for the multi-trillion-dollar company. Stargate remains uniquely positioned to take advantage of the current media landscape, and we hope and pray Martin Gero and the team is able to make the show everyone expects them to make.
