'The Last Witch Hunter 2' With Vin Diesel: What We Know So Far

'The Last Witch Hunter 2' With Vin Diesel: What We Know So Far

In 2015, in between his racing and heisting on the Fast & Furious franchise, Vin Diesel traded the steering wheel for swords in Lionsgate’s supernatural actioner The Last Witch Hunter. The film, directed by Breck Eisner, grossed nearly $150 million worldwide and has developed a cult following since. Naturally, talk of a sequel has been brewing over the years. Now at last, ten years since its release, The Last Witch Hunter 2 is finally seeing the light with a flurry of confirmation, including Diesel back in the forefront as humanity’s last bastion of protection against evil witchcraft.

In the 2015 original, Diesel plays Kaulder, the titular “last witch hunter” cursed with immortality by the Witch Queen he killed centuries ago. He guards a fragile truce between humans and witches. But when a new plague is unleashed, and the Witch Queen’s influence returns, Kaulder must ally with the priest Dolan (Caine), a new generation of Dolan (Elijah Wood), and a rogue witch named Chloe (Rose Leslie) to uncover the conspiracy and battle magical forces. The ending offers a setup: Dolan steps forward to fight by Kaulder’s side, and hints of broader threats linger, leaving room for further adventures.

Critics largely panned the film (Rotten Tomatoes sits at 18%), but audiences kept it alive via home media and streaming. It underperformed domestically (opening weekend was only about $10.8 million), yet its international take and second life on streaming gave it staying power. In recent 2025 reports, the film ranked among the top-viewed entries on Netflix, which likely gave Lionsgate the proof of concept they needed to move forward with sequel development.

Who Will Return, Who Will Not?

Undoubtedly, the most important detail: Diesel is confirmed to reprise the role. He also takes a behind-the-scenes role, serving as the film’s co-producer under his banner One Race Film alongside Lionsgate. Since The Last Witch Hunter premiered, Diesel’s star has hardly dimmed. He continued anchoring the Fast & Furious franchise, explored sci-fi in Guardians of the Galaxy (as Groot), and produced or starred in other genre entries like xXx and Riddick. Diesel knows how to operate within fandoms and franchises — a skill that gives The Last Witch Hunter 2 a stable hand at its helm.

His initial choice to develop Witch Hunter reportedly stemmed from his love of Dungeons & Dragons. Kaulder was inspired by one of Vin Diesel’s own D&D characters. That personal investment gives him not only star power but narrative passion to drive the sequel.

Adding emotional weight to the announcement: at the grand age of 92, Michael Caine will emerge from retirement to reprise his role as Dolan, the priest slash mentor figure who guides Kaulder in his fights to stop a plague propagated by a witch queen. It will be the actor’s first film role since retiring from acting in 2023. His return sets the stage for a high-stakes witchcraft adventure fans have been waiting a decade for.

As for the final third of the original movie’s main trio, there is yet no confirmation on Rose Leslie’s return. Her character Chloe was pivotal to the first film – she was the emotional beating heart amid all the chaos – so it’ll be remiss not to bring the Game of Thrones star back.

Why Now?

In the decade since its theatrical release, The Last Witch Hunter has lingered in the digital ether. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson put it plainly: “The Last Witch Hunter has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade.”

Some sources say that the sequel has been listed as “in development” since 2023. However, it looks like the film’s resurgence on Netflix this year gave it the push that finally kicked everything into high gear.

On the tech side, Fogelson has cited “advancements in filmmaking technology” that reportedly make a sequel with more ambition more economically feasible than before. That suggests production may lean into better visual effects, refined magical sequences, and perhaps, more realistic witchcraft than was possible in 2015. Lionsgate’s confidence also reflects its intention to potentially develop The Last Witch Hunter as the studio’s next big franchise alongside The Hunger Games and John Wick sagas. Will it work like a charm or flame out completely? That depends on what the filmmakers are brewing – which is the perfect time to…

Let The Divination Begin – What We Might See

Given the first film’s setup and how monsters thrive in fantasy follow-ups, here’s what The Last Witch Hunter 2 could possibly explore:

Expansion of the Witch Realm

The sequel may delve into witch politics: covens, power struggles, rogue witches, and perhaps more aggressive incursions into the human world.

A Witch Queen resurgence

If the plague storyline resets or new magical threats arise, Kaulder could face an even stronger or more cunning queen entity.

Dolan’s leadership and legacy

With Caine’s reprisal, Dolan’s character arc may shift into leadership of a magical order or mentor to fledgling witch-hunters.

New allies and betrayals

It'll be interesting to see more witches who defy categorization, shifting alliances, or characters who aren’t fully good or evil. Who doesn’t love a grey morality character?

Kaulder’s emotional toll

Immortality feels heavy. The sequel might explore his regrets, lost connections, and what purpose he continues to serve when the threats multiply.

World-building beyond New York

The first film was largely urban fantasy. A sequel might push boundaries: remote witch enclaves, hidden dimensions, magical sanctuaries, or global myth arcs. The sky is the limit.

Continuity nods and retcons

The sequel might resolve loose threads from the first film, like the origin of Kaulder’s immortality, the true scope of the Axe & Cross organization, or how many Dolans have existed.

The Last Witch Hunter 2 is one of those rare sequels built on slow burn rather than immediate blockbuster success. From its theatrical debut — modest but international — to streaming revival and now a decade-late sequel, the film is proof that persistence and fandom can resurrect even the most unlikely franchises. With Diesel back in full force and Caine returning from retirement, the sequel has both spectacle and emotional history working in its favor.

If the creative team leans into the darker, deeper elements teased in the original and pushes further into magical lore without losing Kaulder’s personal struggles at its heart, this could be more than a sequel — it could redeem Witch Hunter in the eyes of critics and fans alike. And, hell, if all else fails, at least we’ll get to see Diesel swing swords against witches in a world that finally feels like it has something interesting to say.
