Jumanji 4: Everything We Know So Far About the Next Adventure

Jumanji 4: Everything We Know So Far About the Next Adventure

Did you hear the jungle drums pounding again? That’s the sound of another Jumanji movie barrelling toward us. Six years after the last installment, Jumanji: The Next Level rocked the box office, the next film in the blockbuster franchise is officially on the way, and it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest reunions in adventure-comedy history. Sony has confirmed that the sequel has pinned down the December 11, 2026, release date. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are all expected to roll the dice once more — only this time, it sounds like the game might be coming for us. So let's break down Jumanji 4, everything we know so far

What started with Robin Williams’ 1995 fantasy-adventure has become a multibillion-dollar franchise that’s part nostalgia, part reinvention. When Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle hit theaters in 2017, nobody quite expected it to rake in nearly $962 million worldwide. Two years later, The Next Level added another $801 million to the global total, proving that audiences were still game for a mix of jungle madness and body-swap humor.

Director Jake Kasdan once described the magic formula best in an interview with Variety: “It’s a little bit action, a little bit heart, and a whole lot of people running for their lives.”

The chemistry between Johnson, Hart, Black, and Gillan became the series’s secret weapon. Their self-aware banter, physical comedy, and surprising warmth made the movies more than just jungle romps — they became comfort viewing for audiences of all ages. Naturally, people can’t get enough and have been clamoring for another round(house) of adventure.

Considering The Next Level hit theaters in 2019, a seven-year gap between installments indeed seems unusual. But a mix of factors slowed things down: pandemic shutdowns, scheduling conflicts (Johnson and Hart’s calendars look like air-traffic maps), and Kasdan’s commitment to other projects. Thankfully, the cast and production team finally pulled through as developments quickly ramped up with Sony’s calendar announcement.

After a few years of silence and speculation, Jumanji 4 is officially in development—and yes, it’s coming with the full power-up team. Johnson, Hart, Gillan, and Black are all confirmed to return, with Jake Kasdan once again directing.

Black confirmed the comeback during his April 2025 appearance on The Today Show while promoting A Minecraft Movie.

"It's in the works," he said before jokingly teasing: "Spoiler alert, I'm in it!"

At that time, filming hadn’t yet begun. But the big news dropped later that year when Johnson, while attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last September, confirmed that the camera would finally start rolling in November 2025.

Plot Possibilities (Including Some Surprise Return?)

So what’s Jumanji 4 about? The last film ended with a delicious tease: the game world bleeding into the real one, with wild animals stampeding through town. Director Jake Kasdan told Collider that this thread will likely continue, saying: “We’re exploring what happens when the game doesn’t stay inside the console.”

That opens up endless possibilities: new worlds, new avatars, and maybe even a few returning faces from the original 1995 film.

Kirsten Dunst, who starred in the first Jumanji as Judy Shepherd, could make a comeback. Kasdan himself said he’s “intrigued” by the idea but admitted that the way the original movie ended created “a lot of plot complications.”

“The way the original movie ends, as brilliant as it is, creates a lot of plot complications in trying to continue the story with those characters,” he explained. “I don’t know how well you remember it, but the world reverts back to what it was before, as though it never happened.”

With Dunst’s character having no memory of her time in the game, it created a conundrum for the new storyline  – but Kasdan does not rule out her return, or any of the OG cast, just yet.

“We’ve loved trying to figure out some way to do it in a way that is fun and passes some kind of fidelity to the original story,” he said. And if you may recall, Welcome to the Jungle made a brief reference to Williams’ character Alan Parrish as “the guy who built this place.”

On her part, Dunst already expressed her willingness to return to the role that first put her on the map.

“I would definitely do something in that if they wanted me to,” she said during a press junket.

Imagine that: Dunst meeting Johnson’s Bravestone and Hart’s Finbar while a herd of CGI hippos rampages through a suburban street. That’s one crossover we’d absolutely watch.

What’s certain is that the franchise will be welcoming both fresh and familiar faces beyond the core four. Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Madison Iseman, Ser'Darius Blaine, and Awkwafina are set to reprise their roles in the forthcoming film. Meanwhile, Star’s Brittany O'Grady and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s Burn Gorman have joined the cast in as-yet-unspecified roles.

Why Jumanji Still Works

It’s rare for a rebooted franchise to keep its momentum after two films, but Jumanji’s staying power lies in its adaptability. The heart of the story — ordinary people thrown into extraordinary chaos — remains the same, while the format keeps evolving to match the times.

The humor lands because the cast doesn’t take themselves too seriously. The action works because it’s big, colorful, and never loses sight of the characters. And the emotional throughline — the idea of friendship, courage, and rediscovering who you are — still grounds all the madness.

And it is all rooted in the original source material. Not just the 1995 film, but the Chris Van Allsburg children’s book it was based on.

With filming starting in November 2025 and a holiday 2026 release, fans can expect more updates soon. The cast is already teasing surprises, and Kasdan has promised a few “unexpected directions.”

The real question is whether this will be the franchise’s final roll, or just another level. Given how The Next Level ended, the safe bet is that the board game still has a few tricks left. By the time Jumanji 4 hits theaters, it’ll have been seven years since the last adventure. That’s plenty of time for anticipation to build. Coming back to all the hijinks and camaraderie will surely feel like a homecoming, especially around the holiday season.
