We are all hard-pressed to believe that Keanu Reeves, action cinema icon, has never appeared in a superhero film (before you all say it, no, Constantine is not a superhero by any stretch of the imagination). Long sought by both Marvel and DC to immortalize one of their characters, Reeves has instead set his eyes on making his superhero movie debut with BRZRKR, a no-holds-barred violent action saga that might be his juiciest role yet. So what is BRZRKR? And why hasn't the mainstream audience heard of it yet? BRZRKR is a violent action comic book saga that follows the exploits of an immortal half-human, half-deity warrior, known as B or Berzerker. Cursed to commit violence, B has always been at war, fighting and killing through the ages. When the U.S. Government approaches him with a compelling offer that will shed light on his past, B shifts gears, completing missions on behalf of the Yankees that are too violent and dangerous for anyone else.
The BRZRKR comic book launched in 2021, ran for 12 issues, and became a bona fide hit. What makes this property even more compelling is that Reeves co-created it himself, along with Matt Kindt. The fantastic art design of the series, which accompanies the tragic story, is courtesy of famed Marvel and DC artist Ron Garney. The comic’s initial run was such a success that it led to a series of spinoff comics, each earning widespread praise.
Since Reeves co-created this world, the main character B looks exactly like him, making him the perfect candidate for its live-action adaptation. Perhaps Reeves ensured B’s likeness remained similar to his own, as he always had the idea of starring in the adaptation when writing the comic. This adaptation would materialize only a few months after the first comics flew off the shelves in 2021, as Netflix announced that it would be developing the BRZRKR feature film starring Reeves. Reeves will continue the story by voicing the character in a 12-part anime series that follows the film. With the main comic running for 12 issues, we don't know what story elements the feature film will choose to focus on. Considering the expansive story, it could be wise to break down the adaptation into a trilogy.

Considering the sheer carnage and death in the story, Netflix seems like the perfect platform to release the film on, as it will most definitely have a hard R rating, limiting its box office prospects in theatres. We also don't yet know what the budget for the film is; considering the various epic battles and Greek deities in the story, it should be substantial so that the makers can authentically adapt the story for the big screen.
In October of 2021, ‘The Batman’ co-writer Matson Tomlin came on board to write the script to the BRZRKR adaptation. The script was said to be completed only a few months later, and Reeves himself was said to be circling the project to direct in addition to starring in it. After having directed The Man of Tai Chi a few years ago, Reeves had found a renewed appreciation for being behind the camera. After co-writing both Tai Chi and BRZRKR, Reeves admitted he struggles to hand over directing duties once he's involved in the writing process. However, he outlined that he was not yet in the mental spot to helm BRZRKR, but he hoped that he could make it work in the end.

Reeves is no stranger to R-rated fantasy action features. He has made John Wick a household name, starring in 4 John Wick features and a cameo in its spin-off Ballerina. In addition, his stints in the Matrix and Constantine make Reeves the perfect candidate to bring this dystopian tale to life.
Tomlin continued to tweak his script, turning in another draft in 2024 that was said to be even better than the first one. However, any hope of Reeves getting behind the camera would be dashed in March 2025, when Justin Lin, director of several of the Fast and Furious movies, was onboarded as director. This was perhaps a good thing, as a project as big as BRZRKR needs a veteran blockbuster director who can effectively tackle big action setpieces; Reeves had no experience directing a film with such scale. With the script ready and a big-name director on board, it was now only a matter of time before the film went to shoot. However, more than six months have passed since Lin was announced as director, and no further details about the project have come to light.

Netflix, which has always strived for quality content recently, should be eager to make this film as soon as possible. Reeves is a busy man, and Lin, too, has a couple of projects lined up. However, it is important to wait for additional casting announcements and BTS images of the shoot commencement to ensure the film has indeed gone into production. Until these two tidbits drop, we should not be wrong to assume that Netflix might ensure the project continues to languish in development hell, as the studio has become quite ruthless in recent times when it comes to cutting costs.
