Jason Momoa Will Play DC Villain Lobo In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow!
The second film in James Gunn’s DC Universe got an exciting new update recently when it was announced that, after months of speculation, Jason Momoa would indeed play the cigar-chomping alien bounty hunter ‘Lobo’ in the second DCU film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

First introduced in Omega Men #3 (June 1983), Lobo frequently appears as the anti-hero and all-out antagonist of Superman and his friends. An interstellar mercenary/bounty hunter from the utopian planet of Czarnia, Lobo has gone toe to toe with Superman in several iterations. While efforts to make a live-action film on the character have faltered, the character has indeed managed to sneak in cameos in DC television shows such as Justice League and Young Justice.

Momoa had long expressed a desire to portray the character, even during the time he was Aquaman in the DCEU. The casting of Momoa is interesting as his Arthur Curry/Aquman appeared in seven different DCEU projects, starting with his cameo appearance in Batman v. Superman (2016). One of the highlights of the now-defunct DCEU, Momoa was a fan favourite and helped reinvent the character from a joke in the cultural zeitgeist to the brawly, muscular, no-nonsense hero seen in the DCEU. This reinvention was a brainchild of Zack Snyder, who had long disagreed with how the character had been turned into a punching bag.

Snippets of Momoa’s role in the new DC Universe were already starting to spill when Momoa posted a cryptic Instagram post in 2023 enthusiastically talking about an ‘insane meeting’ with Gunn and Safran. This was before his final Aquaman outing was due for release, the sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Momoa’s transition is also interesting due to the fact that he is the first cast member from the previous DC universe to return as a completely new character in the new universe. For disgruntled fans of the DCEU, this presents an opportunity to perhaps see more of their favourite stars in the new DCU.

In addition, Momoa as Lobo is pitch-perfect casting and is one of the few instances where fan casting has transformed into an actor actually being cast for the role. From his height and appearance to his mannerisms and his sheer personality, no one better than Momoa could encapsulate the chaotic mercenary from outer space. Since Lobo is as much a physical presence as he is a snarky, loud-mouthed individual who is prone to using his fists to solve fights, we can't wait to see what Momoa brings to the character.

Momoa’s Lobo role in the Supergirl film is reported to be an extended cameo, and BTS footage of him has appeared on the internet fighting a group of characters on the Supergirl film set. However, Momoa’s Lobo is not a one-off fan service, he will indeed reprise his role in future DCU projects, considering the name attached to the character as well as the hype surrounding the character.

Therefore, Momoa’s casting as Lobo brings a much-needed PR boost to the Supergirl flick. It remains to be seen how Superman will perform in theatres this July, but next year, Supergirl is going to need all the help she can get if she is to soar at the box office. Momoa is one of the most followed men across social media, and we are sure he will hype Lobo the same way he managed to do so with Aquaman.
