Best A24 Horror Movies Ranked

8. Green Room (2015) – A Brutal Survival Horror

When members of a punk rock band go up against neo-nazis in rural America, no one is getting out alive. Jeremy Saulnier is known for his tight, tense thrillers, and Green Room takes it up a notch. With a star-studded cast of Patrick Stewart, Imogen Poots, and Anton Yelchin, Green Room turns out to be a gorefest that is dark, artistic, and smartly written. It also makes perfect use of both lighting and small spaces to really deliver on the desperation to survive. Easily the best Jeremy Saulnier movie.

Best Scare: We won't say much, but the hand hacking scene is pretty messed up.

7. Heretic (2024) – A Claustrophobic Psychological Thriller

Two young Christian emissaries visit a man’s house to invite him to church, but things soon take a turn for the worse. Heretic begins as a standard mystery thriller but soon transforms into something darker and more sinister. Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed gives a performance that is restrainedly deranged as he sets a series of well-thought-out traps for the two girls. Heretic has a lot to say, but where it truly excels is getting under the nerves of the audience; claustrophobic and mysterious, this film will stay with you long after it has ended.

Best Scare: The descent into madness when the two emissaries discover the stairs to the basement, with a startling reveal waiting for them at the end.

6. Talk to Me (2022) – A24’s Modern Horror Hit

A group of friends discovers how to conjure spirits with an embalmed hand, and they convert this into a thrilling game until they go too far, and demonic forces are released. Talk to Me is brilliantly acted and has several of the best jump scares the genre has seen this century. Michael and Danny Phillipou take a pretty straightforward idea and run with it, making a film that becomes more deranged by the minute. Sophie Wilde as Mia is a force of nature as she is forced to take stock of the horror she has unwittingly released.

Best Scare: That car crash that comes out of nowhere.

5. Enemy (2013) – A Psychological Horror Hidden Gem

Known for the Dune universe and Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve made a psychological thriller called Enemy back in 2013. Not a horror film per se, Enemy is a film that will leave you highly disturbed by the time it ends. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Adam and Anthony, doppelgangers who find their lives colliding after a chance encounter. As psychological games ensue, Adam and Anthony will realize they have bargained more than they can chew. Is everything that happens real? Is it all a dream? And what is with the arachnids running around? Watch this film to find out.

Best Scare: The final scene. You’ll get it when you see it. Saying anything about it might spoil the surprise altogether!

4. Midsommar (2019) – Horror in Broad Daylight

Ari Aster followed up Hereditary with an even more deranged flick about a group of friends who decide to attend the Midsommar festival in Northern Europe, only to get trapped in an odyssey of death and torture. Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, and Will Poulter are at the top of their game here as the audience is led to stomach-churning scenes of pain and suffering. Shot in a sunlit glow, Midsommar hides its evil in plain sight, and the best way to see it is to go in completely blind.

Best Scare: The final scene, with the costumes and the flowers.

3. The Witch (2015) – A Slow-Burn Horror Masterpiece

Before Robert Eggers changed the world with The Northman, he made a scary little film back in 2015 called The Witch. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in this tale of panic and despair as a farm family in the 1600s sees itself torn apart by a horrific evil lurking in the woods. The Witch is a slow-burning odyssey of self-destruction as Eggers utilizes our preconceived notions of evil to full effect. There are no cheap gimmicks and jump scares here, only the realization that evil comes to visit you in a familiar face.

Best Scare: The Peek-a-Boo sequence that starts the sequence of events leading to the film’s unsettling climax.

2. Bring Her Back (2025) – A New A24 Horror Standout

It is heartening to see that there remain some new ideas in the genre. 2025’s Bring Her Back is exactly the kind of film that the genre needs. Siblings Andy and Piper are sent to live with a foster parent after their father’s demise, but unknown to them, their new guardian is hiding secrets that will tear their lives apart. From the performances to the central twist, Bring Her Back showcases the very best of the genre; how authentic performances and a moving plot can elevate horror to the point of perfection.

Best Scare: The cantaloupe scene will have you biting your teeth in sheer terror.

1. Hereditary (2018) – A24’s Most Disturbing Horror Film

Widely considered one of the scariest horror movies of the 21st century, Hereditary is Ari Aster’s first movie, and it is shocking how good a debut it is. Hereditary finds a sinister evil preying upon the Graham family, infecting and condemning every member to novel cases of self-destruction. Tony Collette and Alex Wolff give shockingly good performances here, and the slow-burning reign of terror that reaches its crescendo at the end will absolutely destroy you.

Best Scare: That one character bashing her head against the wall while the kid cries out in sheer terror.
