Dune 3: 7 Things the Final Film Must Get Right to Be a Success

Dune 3: 7 Things the Final Film Must Get Right to Be a Success

Dune 3 is one of the most anticipated movies of 2025, bringing Dennis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy to an epic conclusion. Based on Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, the film faces major challenges if it wants to match the success of its predecessors. Here are 7 things Dune 3 must get right to deliver a satisfying ending and become a true sci-fi classic.

Dune 3: What Needs to Happen for a Successful Ending

  • A strong overall film

  • A satisfying trilogy ending

  • Box office success

  • Improvements on Dune: Messiah

  • A compelling Paul Atreides arc

  • More action

  • A powerful villain

Each of these factors will play a crucial role in determining whether Dune 3 lives up to the massive expectations surrounding its release.

1. Dune 3 Must Be a High-Quality Film

The first thing Dune 3 needs to do right is to be actually good. The previous 2 Dune movies were all critical home runs, and it is essential that this one manages to do so as well. This means everything, from the script to the pacing and from the action to the nuance, needs to fire on all cylinders. What Denis Villeneuve has in store for all of us has not been revealed yet, but considering his past filmography, we are sure he is working as hard as he can to make it a worthy follow-up. How good can Dune 3 actually be? If we were to guess, sky’s the limit! If Dune 3 wants to match or surpass the success of Dune: Part Two, it needs to deliver on every level

2. The Dune Trilogy Needs a Strong Ending

The third films in a franchise are rarely great. From Spider-Man 3 to The Dark Knight Rises, and from The Godfather Part III to Matrix: Revolutions, filmmakers have consistently struggled when it comes to wrapping up their films. From meeting strict deadlines to studio interference (or plain old incompetence on the director’s part), a third film in a trilogy often has odds stacked against it. Will Villeneuve flip this trend on its head, and does he have a secret up his sleeve?

Part of the reason we believe in Villeneuve is that he has never missed (yet) and is sure to be very careful in making a threequel that buckles this trend.

3. Dune 3 Must Be a Box Office Success

Dune 3 needs to be a box office success, at least on par with Dune 2. The second Dune made more than $700 million worldwide, and reaching this threshold is quite doable since Dune 3 is releasing around Christmas. However, there is a slight hiccup in this plan as the film is going up day and date against Avengers: Doomsday. Two fan-fueled sequels going head to head might not bode so well for either film, but both films here are highly anticipated. Thus, both can co-exist at the same time in the lucrative holiday season, and as a result, we anticipate Dune 3 to be a significant box office success upon release.

4. Dune 3 Needs to Improve on Dune: Messiah

Everyone knows the novel on which Dune 3 is based, Dune: Messiah, isn't exactly well-received. Whether the fact that it subverted Atreides’s role or whether it’s the controversial ending that sees Paul walk off into the desert, Messiah has rarely been embraced by the fans the way the first novel has been. So it is imperative that Villeneuve takes a long, hard look at the novel and embraces creative liberties with the source material wherever it is deemed necessary. Villeneuve might be the perfect man for the job here; he has significant experience adapting existing works into sharp, well-written scripts (he co-wrote the scripts for both his first two Dune movies and is the writer for Dune 3 as well).

5. Paul Atreides’ Story Must Have a Satisfying Ending

Dune is the story of how Paul Atreides loses control and fades into oblivion, and it is imperative that Dune 3 closes the narrative arc of the character in a satisfying manner. The transformation of Paul, from freedom fighter and chosen one to an emperor that brings about carnage, is the crux of the book, and Villeneuve should have his hands full in taking the audience on this unconventional journey. Dune 3, the novel, is famous for its unconventional and controversial narrative choices regarding Paul, and it will be interesting to see how Villeneuve is able to adapt them for the big screen.

6. Dune 3 Should Lean More on Action

The novel Dune: Messiah is famous for the fact that it barely has any large-scale action sequences compared to the first Dune book. In the place of grand battle sequences, what the film does have is palace intrigue and large-scale family drama. General audiences know Dune as a science fiction action franchise, so it falls upon Villeneuve to amp up some great action sequences for the threequel. Failing to inject some high-quality action might sour away audiences who have a specific image in mind when it comes to the Dune films.

7. Scytale Must Be a Strong Villain

One of the biggest question marks surrounding Dune 3 is its main villain. The villain of Dune 3 is rumored to be Scytale, a face-shifting hybrid who is tasked with causing instability and mayhem against the rule of Paul Atreides. One of the biggest complaints about the novel is that Herbert severely underutilized Scytale and should have given him a much larger role. Here’s where Villeneuve needs to take some creative liberties and ensure Robert Pattinson’s Scytale becomes a formidable foe to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul. The Harkonnens were great and all, but what the final Dune film really needs is a villain that dismantles Paul’s life from the inside.

If Denis Villeneuve can deliver on these seven elements, Dune 3 has the potential to become one of the greatest sci-fi trilogies of all time. With massive expectations, a complex story, and fierce box office competition, all eyes are now on whether the final chapter of Paul Atreides’ journey can truly stick the landing. Whether it’s the story, action, or character arcs, Dune 3 has everything riding on delivering a satisfying and memorable finale.
