It is said that a movie is only as good as its villain, and Hollywood, in its century-old history, has provided quite a few memorable bad guys (and gals) in this regard. From evil robots to space fascists and from psychopaths to crazy clowns, there has been no shortage of fantastic antagonists when it comes to movies. Let’s take a look at the 7 Greatest Movie Villains of All Time in the list below.
7. Agent Smith (The Matrix)

The Wachowski Brothers’ Matrix (1999) was not only a seminal film that shifted our collective subconsciousness about AI and control, it also featured one of the most nuanced villain performances of the century. Hugo Weaving effortlessly stepped into the role of Agent Smith, a program tasked with eliminating all threats to the Matrix that humans were unknowingly imprisoned in. Cold, calculating, and almost unbeatable, Smith’s monologues about his sheer hatred of humanity were a treat, and he was more than a match for Neo until he became too powerful by the very end. A pale Agent Smith impression by Jonathan Groff in the latest Matrix film only made us miss Weaving that much more.
6. T-1000 (Terminator 2: Judgement Day)

James Cameron already impressed everyone with his first Terminator film in 1984, but no one had any idea how far the 1991 sequel would take Cameron’s take on sentient robots and AI who declare war on humanity. Flipping audience expectations, Cameron hoodwinked everyone when he made Arnie’s villainous T-800 into the hero, with Robert Patrick taking on the role of the unkillable villain this time around. Able to turn his body into liquid metal, the T-1000 is more than a match for both the T-800 and Sarah Connor, who become increasingly desperate by the end. With icy cold looks and a slew of tricks up his sleeve, Robert Patrick delivered what was the greatest villain of the franchise.
5. Thanos (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

The MCU has had plenty of good villains, but no one who presented a grave existential threat to its heroes and worlds. Enter Thanos, the Mad Titan, who was quietly collecting Infinity Stones for his nefarious plan, while the heroes of the MCU went about their own business. The first confrontation between Thanos and the MCU heroes saw Thanos thoroughly dispatch them, and from then on, the threat only grew as he attacked New York and Wakanda and battled our heroes across the cosmos using his Space Stone.
Thanos was not only the first MCU villain to leave a significant mark on the cultural zeitgeist, but what made him scary was that he was right (in his own twisted way). Marvel has tried for six years to replace the character but failed. Let’s see how they do with their new overarching bad guy, Dr. Doom, in the next two Avengers flicks.
4. Darth Vader (Star Wars)

Arguably the most famed villain of all time, Anakin Skywalker was a hopeful albeit brash young Jedi before untoward circumstances led him to the dark side, hurtling him down a path of unspeakable evil. Anakin’s story is the bedrock of the entire Star Wars franchise, and his descent into the darkness remains the quintessential Star Wars story of all time. Played to perfection in his younger years by Hayden Christensen and in his prime by James Earl Jones, Vader is brutal, relentless, and able to thoroughly defeat most foes through his skill alone. The character’s sheer impact on culture was so great that Disney has managed to resurrect him for their new Star Wars films and shows.
3. The Joker (Heath Ledger)

No list would be complete without Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the iconic DC villain The Joker, who went toe to toe with Christian Bale’s Batman in Christopher Nolan’s masterful 2008 superhero caper The Dark Knight. With a fantastic script elevating an already fascinating performance, Ledger brought a new spin to the Clown Prince of Crime, forcing Batman to confront his hypocrisies whilst dismantling his entire life brick by brick. He almost won, too, as Batman would be framed for murder and forced to hide back in the shadows until the events of the sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, would force him to come out of retirement once more. Ledger’s Joker is not only the gold standard when it comes to superhero villains, but it birthed a generation of homages and copycats that fail to surpass him to this day.
2. Hannibal Lecter (The Silence of the Lambs)

Few movie villains have chewed scenery as effortlessly as Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter. An extremely gifted psychologist who turns to eating humans, Lector is a beast in all forms of the word. With an IQ higher than most humans, Lector is able to pry open his nemesis’s insecurities and weaknesses, as he plays around with his prey before making them his next meal. In The Silence of the Lambs, Lector is forced to coordinate with novice FBI Agent Clarice Starling as a new serial killer wreaks havoc. But, in true Lector fashion, he has a nefarious plan up his sleeve, and Starling has no idea the monster she is about to unleash on the entire world.
1. Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men)

In the Coen brothers’ magnum opus, No Country for Old Men, Javier Bardem brings to life a sadistic psychopath unparalleled in cinematic history. When a drug deal goes bad, mysterious parties dispatch an equally mysterious individual, Anton Chigurh, to track down the two missing suitcases of cash. What follows is an odyssey of blood and death as Chigurh systematically finds and eliminates each individual who comes across the cash. Labelled by psychologists to be the defining portrayal of a psychopath, Bardem’s Chigurh is a commanding presence who puts all veteran actors in the film, from Tommy Lee Jones to Josh Brolin, in the dust.
