Rumors have been circulating since as far back as 2021, hinting that a Harry Potter reboot was in the works. Executives were quick to shut the rumors down, but the cat was out of the bag and nothing could stop the excitement building among fans eager to see Hogwarts and its characters return to screens.

When the series was announced as in development in 2023, it was said it would serve as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels, originally published between 1997 and 2007.

In a statement on their website, Max said: “The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for…Each season will be authentic to the original books…while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise.”

NEW HERMIONE ACTOR

Although the original Harry Potter films remain a central part of the franchise’s legacy, the TV reboot is designed to be a distinct, long‑running series that reintroduces Hogwarts and its characters to a new generation — and gives longtime fans a deeper, more expansive look at the stories they grew up with.

Which actors are starring in the new Harry Potter series?

NEW DUMBLEDORE ACTOR

While the eight films made the name ‘Harry Potter’ synonymous with actor Daniel Radcliffe, Max stated that the series will feature “a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom.”

In 2025, having gone through long casting auditions, HBO confirmed half a dozen cast members for the upcoming Harry Potter series.

These included: John Lithgow, who will play Dumbledore; Paapu Essiedu, who will play Severus Snape; Janet McTeer, as Professor McGonagall; Nick Frost, as Hagrid; Paul Whitehouse, as Argus Finch; and Luke Thallon, as Professor Quirrel.

But most importantly, fans were waiting with bated breath for the three biggest casting decisions of the entire series. Those of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton were the chosen ones, bringing fresh faces to the iconic trio. From the moment they were announced,  excitement has been building among fans eager to see how they will bring these beloved characters to life.

Who else is involved in the series?

J.K ROWLING HARRY POTTER SERIES

J.K. Rowling is attached to the project as an executive producer and has been involved in discussions to ensure the adaptation stays true to her original material, while industry veterans from the original films — including producer David Heyman — are also part of the creative team.

Francesca Gardiner, who has been involved in hit shows such as Succession and Killing Eve, has been given the role of lead writer and showrunner,, bringing her wealth of experience on some of the biggest shows in recent history to the table.

Joining her behind the scenes is Mark Mylod, an Emmy‑winning director and producer whose credits include Succession, Game of Thrones, and The Last of Us. Mylod will serve as executive producer and direct multiple episodes, helping shape the visual style and tone of the series.

What has J.K. Rowling said about the new Harry Potter series?

HBO HARRY POTTER

Rowling, who wrote all seven Harry Potter novels, has voiced her approval of the reboot, stating that she’s "looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series."

She is officially credited as an executive producer on the HBO series, and she has been confirmed to have played a key role in selecting the showrunner and director for the project.

Rowling has also read and publicly praised the scripts for the first episodes, indicating her approval of the adaptation’s direction.

Her involvement is described as high‑level and advisory, with influence on major creative decisions rather than detailed scriptwriting or filming work.

HARRY POTTER WRITER

This in itself has generated interest among fans, considering the controversy surrounding Paapa Essiedu’s casting, and the fact that he shared an open letter opposing a UK Supreme Court ruling around trans rights; Rowling both celebrated and supported this ruling.

Reacting to Essiedu’s signing of the letter, Rowling said on X that she was happy to disagree with Essiedu politically, without needing to get involved in his role as an actor. She stated: “I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series, and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”

Why this Harry Potter series could be the new Wednesday

WEDNESDAY HARRY POTTER

This new Harry Potter series will surely give audiences a deeper understanding of the story J.K Rowling set out to tell in her books.

By embracing the tone and depth of the original source material, it has the potential to redefine it in the same way the hit Netflix series Wednesday did to The Addams Family film.

Where The Addams Family movies were constrained by runtime, Wednesday could fully explore character arcs and subplots in a way the film never could. It elevated its original source material, transforming it into a character-driven, genre-bending story that had emotional depth.

JENNA ORTEGA WEDNESDAY

Of course, the original Harry Potter films were behemoths in their own right, but with each individual book being given eight episodes, each an hour long, the scope to tell a richer story is immense.

This is the chance to reinterpret rather than replicate, which will give audiences a more immersive viewing experience.

What has the fan reaction been to the latest news around the Harry Potter series?

Paapa Essiedu SNAPE

Fan reaction to the news and early footage has been intense and mixed.

Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Snape ignited widespread discussion on social media, with many fans debating the choice. Much of the conversation centered on his race, since the books describe Snape as “a thin man with sallow skin.”

Similarly, fans asked how certain book scenes involving Snape - including a scene where Harry’s father James uses a spell to hang Snape upside down by a tree - could avoid having racial connotations.

There’s also been conversation around the broader cast choices: many viewers are excited about performers like John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall, seeing them as strong additions to the ensemble.

NEW HARRY POTTER SERIES

Others have shared nostalgic reactions, with original cast members (like Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films) publicly supporting the new actors stepping into iconic roles.

Even so, the first casting announcements sparked excitement, with many fans praising the series’ new direction.

So with a new cast and fresh storytelling in place, the Harry Potter TV reboot promises to transport both longtime fans and a new generation back to the magic of Hogwarts!
