Hard to believe it has been almost 16 years since the last ‘Friday the 13th’ flick came out. What is even more shocking is that one of America’s most prolific horror slasher franchises has been unable to release a new installment in a time when horror films have had a worldwide renaissance. So, when Crystal Lake, a prequel television series to the Friday the 13th franchise, was announced in 2022, fans were excited to finally dig their teeth into the world of Jason and Camp Crystal once more. Let’s dive into how the series came together, how far along it is, and when it might finally see the light of day.

Like many other iconic horror slasher franchises, Friday the 13th franchise got its start at the end of the 70s and primarily focuses on a bunch of clueless campers as they are hunted viciously by a guy in a hockey mask named Jason Vorhees. The franchise boasts 12 feature films to date, all theatrically released and all profitable except for 2001’s Jason X. In addition, the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise remains 2003’s Freddy vs Jason, which brought Freddy from The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise into a fan favourite showdown with Jason Vorhees. A reboot followed in 200,9, which was the last time we saw Jason on screen, and thus, slasher fans, disappointed with the latest genre fare offered by Tinseltown, have clamoured for his return ever since.
With 2009’s Friday the 13th a box office success, work began in earnest on the sequel. However, the film rights to the franchise had been divided between two studios since the 80s, and unexpected headwinds such as the recession meant that the rights holders were being extra careful with a follow-up. A slew of writing and directing duos were announced in the subsequent years to bring the sequel to life, but none managed to materialize. The complexity in navigating the film rights issues prompted New Line to auction the franchise’s TV rights instead and thus, aim to develop a new franchise property on the small screen.

However, this new direction was initially met with some skepticism, as movie franchises pivoting to TV usually means they are entering prolonged periods of development hell. Announcing a TV series in such cases is usually a stopgap measure, as the series almost always does not end up happening. Things, however, took an unexpected turn when prestige indie studio A24 came on board to make this series, aptly titled ‘Crystal Lake’. Powered by prolific producer Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), the studio wanted a limited series that dove into the mythology of Crystal Lake, the birth of Jason, and how he would transform into the remorseless killer seen in the film.
Fuller had wanted Charlize Theron to take on the role of Pamela Vorhees, Jason’s mother. An $80 million, 8-episode series was planned with a Fuller-penned Red Wedding-type episode at the very end. This episode was said to take place over a frozen Crystal Lake, where everyone would be pursued by Jason over the thin ice, and nobody would be safe. Realizing he had full creative control, Fuller wanted the series to move away from its campy, slasher roots into something more sinister, like his Hannibal series.

However, fiscal mismanagement ultimately torpedoed this version of Crystal Lake as A24 forced Fuller out, instead settling on a full rework of the series. Later investigative bombshells would reveal significant cost overruns, and there were even rumors that unpaid writers and inexperienced executives had destroyed whatever vision A24 had planned for the series. Starting afresh, A24 wanted a tighter budget and a vision that would be true to the franchise roots, taking inspiration from each film that came before.
Brad Caleb Kane, who brought the IT prequel ‘Welcome To Derry’ to life, was tapped as the new producer to get Crystal Lake going once more. Kane assembled his own writers' room to redo the scripts, and by the fall of 2024, production was underway. Secondary cast members, who included Camp Crystal campers and counselors, were also cast soon after. In a subtle nod to the 1980 original, fan favourite franchise veteran Adrienne King joined the series in an undisclosed but important role. She had played the counselor Alice Hardy in the first Friday the 13th film.

Crystal Lake Friday the 13th series
In March 2025, it was reported that Linda Cardellini had been cast as the lead in the series. Famous for her roles in Mad Men and Scooby Doo, Cardellini is set to portray Pamela Vorhees, Jason’s mother. Eagle-eyed fans remember Pamela as the original villain of the first Friday the 13th film, who is driven to the path of revenge after her son drowns at Camp Crystal.
While no official plot details have emerged, the casting of Cardellini implies that Pamela is the main character of the show (in the first season at least), and since Callum Vinson has been cast as a young Jason Vorhees, the Jason we all know and love won't start slashing until the next season. This is in line with plot leaks that imply Season one to have an outsized focus on the formative years of Jason. In October 2025, it was reported that the series had wrapped production and was targeting a release date of early 2026 on the Universal streaming service, Peacock.

Crystal Lake Friday the 13th series
One of the most iconic horror slasher film franchises in history, transforming into a television series produced by A24, was not on anyone’s bingo card, and yet here we are. Crystal Lake has not only wrapped production, but with big names attached, the series is deep in post-production with an impending release date in the upcoming year. Fingers crossed that the series is better than we hope it is and that it leads to multiple seasons of carnage at Camp Crystal.
