The 7 Best Bruce Willis Movies Ranked

Standing tall alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone as the face of action cinema of the '80s and '90s, Bruce Willis remains a giant of the industry whose contributions to Hollywood can seldom be matched. With close to a hundred films under his belt, Willis has done it all, tackling every genre, working with the greatest filmmakers of our era, and delivering classics that remain relevant to this day.  Let's dive into the living legend’s career as we unearth the top 7  best Bruce Willis movies ranked.

7. The 5th Element

There is no other way to say it; nobody expected Willis to tackle a project as crazy and zany as Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element (1997), and even fewer expected him to succeed. Set in the 23rd century, Willis plays a taxi driver, Korben, who inadvertently becomes the planet’s last hope when the mysterious Leeloo stumbles into his cab. As a malevolent cosmic entity prepares to attack imminently, the key to Earth’s salvation lies in Korben finding four mystical stones with raw power. Armed with his usual stoic attitude, Willis makes the film his own, slipping into the role of an unlikely hero effortlessly. He is the sole face of logic and reason in a film populated by insanity and thus manages to ground this outlandish space invasion story in a way that has made it a cult classic.

6. Armageddon

Michael Bay’s 1998 space disaster Armageddon may have its naysayers, but few can argue about its sheer spectacle. Armageddon sees Bruce Willis play an oil driller who is sent up into space to prevent an asteroid from hitting Earth and destroying all life. Co-starring Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, and Steve Buscemi, Armageddon is the perfect summer film, armed with both heart and massive stakes. With stunning space action sequences and Willis’ heroic leading man, the film is the quintessential summer blockbuster that surprisingly became one of the two Michael Bay films to be added to the Criterion Collection.

5. Pulp Fiction

Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) has so many memorable characters that one might miss Willis entirely. From John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson to Uma Thurman and Ving Rhames, Pulp Fiction throws a cast of eccentric characters into a violent, intertwining web of chaos and death. Bruce Willis shines as boxer Butch Coolidge, who double-crosses a mob boss and fights to escape two sadistic attackers while trying to build a new life with his girlfriend.

While Pulp Fiction is by no means a Bruce Willis vehicle, Willis more than manages to hold his own against some of the greatest actors of his generation and is an integral part of this tale of violence and death.

Before Rian Johnson made his somewhat controversial Star Wars film, he made Looper (2012), a gritty, violent science fiction tale of an assassin trying to hunt his older self. With Joseph Gordon Levitt playing the younger hitman and Bruce Willis his older self, Looper takes us down the messy road of time travel and meeting your variants in awesome fashion.

Willis is cold-blooded here, motivated by the death of a loved one to do a task no one else will. At the other end of the spectrum in this battle of wits is his younger self, and no matter who comes out on top, they both lose. Looper is filmmaking at its finest; an original story anchored by great performances and even greater repercussions. This is easily one of Willis’ finest films and a great return to form for the actor who had hit a rough patch in the late 2000s.

Back when At the time, M. Night Shyamalan seemed unstoppable. In Unbreakable (2000), he told a grounded superhero story about a man who survives a plane crash and is hunted by an eccentric believer convinced he has superpowers. Willis plays the survivor David Dunn, and Samuel L. Jackson dons the eccentric Elijah; together, the duo is dynamite with powerhouse performances and twists that will leave you speechless. While Willis’s role here demands a muted performance, his sheer ability to command a towering presence through his physicality alone is profound. Even though we have a lot of great films on this list, Unbreakable remains Willis’ most underrated role in the entirety of his career.

Widely considered one of the greatest action movies of all time, it was the John McTiernan classic Die Hard that put Willis on the map back in 1988. Willis plays John McClane, an off-duty New York cop who arrives in LA to attend his wife’s office Christmas party. When a group of terrorists takes over the complex, it is up to McClane and his wits to save the hostages, take down the bad guys, and prevent a city-wide catastrophe. While Die Hard is already a great film, what elevates it further is Willis’ charisma and earnestness, coupled with his dynamite rivalry with the story’s villain, Hans Gruber.

From timeless one-liners to creative gunfights, Die Hard cemented Willis’ success, making him an indispensable part of the American action genre for the next two decades.
