A New Terminator Movie Is Being Written By James Cameron

hird3rdthirdone Just like the sentient robots sent from the future to eradicate humanity in its movies, the Terminator franchise refuses to die. Ever since the third movie underperformed way back in 2003, box office analysts have left no stone unturned in writing the franchise’s obituary with each successive film, the latest being Terminator: Dark Fate in 2019. And yet, the franchise continues to endure, and every few years, we find ourselves watching a new Terminator film against all odds.

The brainchild of arguably the greatest blockbuster film director of all time, James Cameron, the first Terminator blew everyone away when it was released in 1984. Introducing us to a horrific future where Al has defeated humanity, the first film sees desperate remnants of human resistance sending a soldier back in time to prevent the machines from killing Sarah Conner, mother of future resistance leader John Conner.

Since John holds the key to the machines’ destruction, the sentient AI Skynet hopes that by killing Sarah, they can prevent John from ever being born and thus cause a catastrophic blow to human resistance. The 1991 sequel was even better, focusing on human resistance forces sending back a modified T-800 model robot to protect young John against the T-1000, an advanced liquid nano Terminator that is even harder to eliminate.

There have been a total of 6 Terminator films in all. Cameron directed the first two films in the franchise and stepped away to do True Lies and Titanic once he couldn't crack the story of the third one. However, the franchise moved forward without him, and Cameron’s involvement varied with each new installment. By the time Dark Fate hit theaters in 2019, he had taken on a much more active creative role in shaping the series once again.

However, when Cameron stepped away from the director’s chair in 1991, the franchise began marking low after low. Each of the four films that followed Cameron’s groundbreaking sequel fell short in their own distinct ways. The Rise of the Machines tried to continue the story 12 years after Judgment Day but ended up feeling corny and half-baked. Terminator: Salvation shifted the action entirely to the future, showing an adult John Connor in a bleak, joyless world. Terminator Genisys (2015) rewrote the timeline and controversially turned John Connor into a villain, while Dark Fate (2019) introduced immigrant themes that audiences quickly rejected. Of the four sequels, Genisys is widely seen as the low point of the series — undermining legacy characters and erasing the very foundation of what many consider the greatest Terminator film ever made: Judgment Day.

While Genisys was the bullet that killed the franchise, it was Terminator: Dark Fate’s opening scene that showed the producers were out of touch with the audience. Shot like an epilogue from the end of Judgement Day, it shows the young John brutally murdered in broad daylight by another T-800 sent from the future after having defeated the T-1000 some days ago.

Even though Linda Hamilton’s Sara Conner managed to return for Dark Fate, the blatant disrespect to T2, coupled with the heavy handed immigrant themes in the story, meant that audiences swiftly rejected the film. As a result, Dark Fate became the lowest-grossing Terminator sequel of all time, even though Cameron had been quite vocal in supporting the film in the media. Following this, we all thought that the franchise was well and truly over, but Cameron, it seems, had other plans and was quietly plotting another return to the battle between Skynet and humanity.

Since Cameron has spent the better part of the last two decades making Avatar and its numerous sequels, no one expected him to have an active role in the next Terminator when two more Avatar sequels are on track for release till 2031. When news broke in September 2024 that Cameron was writing a new story for the 40-year-old franchise, it caught fans around the world off guard — and instantly reignited excitement for what’s next.

Confirming his return, Cameron surmised that it is important to get new audiences on board and that means leaning not too heavily on the legacy characters that have come to define the franchise since its inception. However, in a recent interview with CNN, Cameron said that he was having difficulty writing the new film as the technology had progressed so far along that we are all currently living in a science fiction age. Thus, he feared his ideas getting outdated before the film would come to fruition

Whatever the current status of the script may be, it does seem Cameron is intent on writing the film and making it a reality. While Terminator has always centered on John Connor and the T-800, some might worry that Cameron is moving away from what made the franchise great. But if history’s taught us anything, it’s never to bet against James Cameron — the man who made Titanic and Avatar, two completely original films that became the highest-grossing movies of all time.

Cameron knows blockbuster filmmaking and audiences better than anyone, and if he has decided to pen the new Terminator film, then he must have a banger story up his sleeve. Knowing Cameron, he will crack the story and then swiftly move on to the screenplay. Then again, Cameron’s passion for adapting the harrowing WWII story, Ghosts of Hiroshima, might kick the Terminator can down the road as well.

It’s now confirmed that James Cameron is writing the new Terminator film while also working on the Avatar sequels. As the creative force behind the franchise, a Terminator movie with a Cameron script sounds like an absolute win. With two more Avatar films slated for release till 2031, Cameron might not have it in him to step into the director’s chair. That doesn’t mean he’s stepping back — he’ll still play a major role in the new Terminator film. So fingers crossed that we get a banger new Terminator movie after four lackluster sequels that almost destroyed all the goodwill that Cameron built with Judgement Day.
