Alita: Battle Angel 2 is officially in development, with James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez planning a return to the cyberpunk universe.
After years of fan campaigns and studio uncertainty, the long-awaited sequel is finally moving forward — but when will Alita 2 release, and who is returning?

Is Alita: Battle Angel 2 Confirmed?
Although Alita: Battle Angel 2 has not been officially confirmed by Disney, producers James Cameron, Jon Landau, and director Robert Rodriguez have indicated that the sequel is in development.
Multiple sequels are also reportedly planned, though production may be delayed due to James Cameron’s commitments to the Avatar franchise, potentially pushing development past 2026.
Directed by Rodriguez and written and produced by the legendary Cameron, Alita: Battle Angel is based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Yukito Kishiro. The film is set in the post-apocalyptic future and focuses on Alita, a female cyborg who has lost her limbs and all her memories. Discovered in a junkyard by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds and takes care of her, Alita begins a journey to uncover her identity.
As she embraces a unique cyborg martial art, Alita transforms into a bounty hunter, crossing paths with some very shady individuals. The story traces Alita's attempts to rediscover her past and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey.

How the first film came together
Cameron had been trying to get Alita off the ground since before 2000, and it had been another legendary director, Guillermo del Toro, who had first introduced him to the manga.
He eventually wrote a script in the mid-2010s and originally planned to direct the film himself. However, his long-term commitment to the Avatar sequels forced a change in direction. So Cameron brought his friend Robert Rodriguez on board, and he absolutely delivered..
With at least two sequels to the film planned if it all went according to plan, it all hinged on how the film would perform at the box office.
The film was released in the fall of 2019, and its global box office led to significant discussion about whether it broke even in theatres. Made on a budget of $170 million, Alita made around $405 million at the global box office.

The film earned about 70% of its box office outside the U.S. Some publications argued it needed between $400–$500 million to break even, while others claimed it actually lost around $53 million before factoring in marketing and home media sales.
Whatever the case may be, the slightly disappointing box office performance of the film forced Cameron and 20th Century Fox to pause whatever plans they had cooking up.

Why the Sequel Took So Long
Fans expected a sequel announcement, but as the silence dragged on, excitement gave way to frustration.
At the same time, the film’s fanbase began to grow louder. Much like the Snyderverse movement, Alita supporters launched social media campaigns that quickly gained momentum. From trending hashtags to coordinated fan events, the so-called “Alita Army” made it clear there was still strong demand for a sequel.
One of the rarest stamps of approval came from creator Yukito Kishiro himself, who came forward to announce how much he had loved the adaptation.
Cameron and the studio came to realize they had a dedicated fan base at their fingertips.

With Cameron always eager to jump back into the franchise, it all depended on Fox to greenlight the project. However, the studio continued to drag its feet in the matter as it was quietly negotiating a sale to Disney, afraid that an Alita sequel misfire might hit their valuation.

Behind the scenes momentum
The sequel process took a weird turn in 2022 when Variety claimed Cameron had forced Rodriguez to take a virtual blood oath to ensure they would make a sequel to Alita. Of course, it was meant as a joke, but it showed how the duo was eager to get back to the world they had created.
Rodriguez has gone on record multiple times to state that he is ready to go back, and he is just waiting for the studio to announce it officially.
Some might say that the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney might have created some problems for the sequel, but with Cameron at the helm, whose own Avatar sequels effortlessly transferred to Disney, it is a given that Disney will be eager to greenlight the film when Cameron is confident in it and throws his full weight behind it.
Alita 2 Cast: Who Is Returning for the Sequel?
It was finally in April 2023 that Alita fans could breathe a sigh of relief.
Producer Jon Landau confirmed that the sequel was finally in official development and both Rodriguez and Rosa Salazar would return as director and star. A few months later, Cameron announced that he was working on more than one sequel and that he has a whole plan in mind for where to take the character next.
How Cameron will juggle these sequels is unclear, alongside the Avatar films that have taken up more than twenty years of his career, he is also writing The Terminator redux, so it is safe to assume that he already has his hands pretty full. No further details about the film have come forward since then.

Alita: Battle Angel 2 Release Date
While the sequel is now firmly in development, no release date has been announced.
Cameron often takes long breaks between sequels, yet he consistently delivers follow-ups that blow audiences’ minds.

For now, it’s a waiting game, but one that finally feels like it’s moving in the right direction.
