Lord of War 2: Nicolas Cage Returns as Yuri Orlov — Cast, Plot, and Release Updates

Lord of War 2 is officially in development, with Nicolas Cage returning as arms dealer Yuri Orlov. Nearly two decades after the 2005 cult crime drama quietly found a massive audience on home media and streaming, Hollywood is moving forward with an unlikely sequel that once seemed impossible. As studios increasingly mine cult classics for new life, Lord of War 2 stands out as a rare case where timing, global relevance, and Nicolas Cage’s career resurgence have finally aligned—turning a former box-office disappointment into one of the most surprising follow-ups in recent memory.

Lord of War 2 Cast: Who Is Returning and Who’s New?

The 2005 feature Lord of War was directed by acclaimed director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, In Time). The film immortalized the life and times of Yuri Orlov (played by Cage), a Ukrainian-American arms dealer who devises increasingly ingenious ways to traffic Soviet arms across the world with the Interpol in hot pursuit. As he dares further and further, his luck begins to run out with some very unforeseen consequences for his life.

In addition to Nicolas Cage, the film also stars Jared Leto as Yuri’s brother and business partner, Ethan Hawke as an Interpol agent tasked to bring down Yuri, and Bridget Moynahan as a supermodel who becomes Yuri’s wife. The film received positive reviews from critics and was praised for shedding light on a trade that has contributed to the death of millions across the globe. Amnesty International, the world-renowned human rights NGO, also came forward to note that the film did fantastic work in shedding light on the global arms trade.

Made for around $40 million, Lord of War was a financial disappointment at the box office when it first released in 2005, grossing only $72 million across the globe. Audiences failed to connect with a story that made the bad guy the protagonist. In addition, the film’s bleak ending (which saw Uri released from prison and going back to his old ways) also did not resonate with general audiences who wanted a classic feel-good story with the villain caught at the end. While theatrical audiences rejected the film in 2005, it was newer audiences that saw the strong points of the film in the years after the film’s release.

Coupled with Cage’s performance and the overall black comedic tone of the story, Lord of War found new fans amongst the masses, resonating strongly and becoming quite a cult classic in recent memory. Known for his unhinged performances, the film features a surprisingly measured Cage whose greed for millions begins to take a horrible toll on his life. Inspired by the real-life Russian arms dealer nicknamed ‘Merchant of Death’, the film expertly combines high-stakes drama with real-life conflicts to create a story that is infectiously entertaining.

Needless to say, with conflicts raging across the globe for the last two decades, Lord of War is considered a somewhat poetic and prophetic film. Its highly accurate portrayal of weapons smuggling, coupled with its depiction of rampant institutional corruption, makes it one of the most stunning stories ever put on film. Thus, the film has effortlessly transformed into an endlessly rewatchable classic, with fans across the globe. With high sales in home media and streaming, the rights holders to the film realized that they could make a sequel to the film to capitalize on its popularity. With Cage in the middle of a career renaissance nowadays, the timing for this sequel could not be better.

Lord of War 2 Plot: What Is the Sequel About?

While rumors of a potential sequel had been flowing around for quite some time, what was needed was confirmation from an official source that this was indeed the case. This confirmation came in the shape of The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news in May 2023 that Lord of War 2 was officially a go with Cage reprising his role of Yuri Orlov. Aiming to outdo the plot of the first film, Bill Skarsgard was signed on to play Orlov’s adult son, who had taken a liking to his father’s exploits to become an even more notorious arms dealer. Plot leaks pointed to a heated rivalry between father and son as both will attempt to sell to competing forces. At the end of the year, Andrew Niccol was also back in the director’s chair, the script was said to be done, and filming was set to begin in 2024.

Lord of War 2 Release Date, Filming Status, and Updates

In May 2025, while talking to The Playlist, Cage referred to the sequel as ‘Lords of War’, a play on the title of the original, inferring how there were now two notorious gunrunners instead of one. Cage also reiterated how excited he was to dive into Niccol’s script, which goes into quite a few unexpected directions. However, unforeseen issues meant that the film had not begun shooting by 2024, and the shooting schedule was delayed once more. In November 2025, Sylvia Hoeks and Greg Tarzan Davis also joined the cast in undisclosed roles, with filming set to begin later on in Budapest, Belgium and Morocco. By December 2025, it was reported that filming had indeed begun on the sequel, and if everything remains on schedule, we might be seeing the film released by the end of this year.

So, Lord of War 2 actually happening is a big deal. It is not every day that a cult film that underperformed at the box office gets a sequel, and no one, I repeat no one, expected Lord of War 2 to get across the finish line. We all expected the film to die during pre-production, but the fact that the sequel actually survived to shoot is a testament to both the script and the creatives involved in the project. The film’s plot sounds exciting, and we can always count on Cage to infuse his films with a sort of zany energy that is found nowhere else.
