Dune 3 Predictions: What to Expect From Villeneuve’s Final Film
Dune 3 Release Date, Cast, and What We Know So Far

Initially, it was reported that Villeneuve wanted a bit of a break after Dune 2 released in 2024. It was the biggest film Villeneuve had made until then and understandably, huge blockbusters have a way of wearing out their makers. However, something unexpected happened and Amazon selected Villeneuve to helm their Bond reboot. Realizing that committing to Bond before making Dune 3 would lock him for another 3 years, Villeneuve decided to ensure he completed his Dune trilogy before bidding it farewell forever.
Thus, with a release date set for December 2026, Dune 3 was a go. All of the cast from the previous two films return, in addition to the inclusion of Robert Pattinson as the new villain Scytale. Villeneuve knows the stakes are high and he is hoping to make it the best film of the trilogy. Will he succeed? We won’t know until release, but based on Villeneuve’s track record, we would like to make some predictions.

Dune 3 Prediction #1: Never Bet Against Denis Villeneuve

Our first prediction; it is not wise to bet against Villeneuve. The man literally has not made a bad film or a disappointing film in his entire life. From what is probably the best sequel ever made (in the form of Blade Runner 2049) to some of the best thrillers the genre has ever seen (Sicario, Prisoners, and Incendies), Villeneuve has consistently improved with each film he’s made. He is extremely dedicated to the craft and has not taken a break since 2009. He has made 10 films in the last 17 years, a record I don't think any other major director has even come close to.
Dune 3 Prediction #2: Villeneuve Writing Increases Masterpiece Potential

Our second prediction; Villeneuve is writing this film, which ups its odds of being a masterpiece. Most know Villeneuve as a great director but fewer still know that he is also a fantastic writer. He wrote the first four of his films and one of them was even nominated for an Oscar. The man is obviously a great talent with the pen and there is no one better who might be more suited to Dune 3. Also, Villeneuve has written each Dune film and from the characterization to the action, it shows how stunning each iteration has turned out. Thus, Villeneuve writing Dune 3 only increases the chances of it being better.

Dune 3 Prediction #3: No Signs of Creative Burnout

Our third prediction; Villeneuve does not feel burnt out. The man is on the record for delivering four films, each of them awesome, in a span of only four years. These four films are Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario and Arrival; less than a year for preproduction, shooting and post production on each of these movies. So Villeneuve is highly efficient, has the work ethic of a zealot and can absolutely deliver an entertaining, visceral blockbuster with two years of prep time.

Dune 3 Prediction #4: A Perfectly Set-Up Finale

Our final prediction; each of the two Dune movies have led to this moment. Villeneuve is a masterful storyteller and pays extreme attention to detail. The story sets up a powerful finale that can pay off the threads from the first two films while also opening the door for Warner Bros. to continue the Dune saga beyond Villeneuve. Everyone (even some of those who might be dead) is returning for Dune 3 and if Blade Runner 2049 was any indication, Villeneuve can absolutely pull off thoughtful, melancholic blockbusters that have all but become extinct.

Dune 3 Prediction #5: The Dune: Messiah Challenge

However, there is one point that can potentially turn the tide against Villeneuve. This particular aspect is the source material for the film itself; Frank Herbert’s second Dune novel, Dune: Messiah. Considered weaker than his first book and filled with baffling creative decisions, fans do not consider Messiah to be the magnum opus that the first Dune novel was. So, Villeneuve will have absolutely taken creative liberties when adapting the novel. How these liberties will change the story remains to be seen but Villeneuve is a fantastic writer so we have nothing to worry about.

Does Dune 3 Need to Be a Masterpiece to Succeed?

Even if Dune 3 doesn't turn out to be a masterpiece and is only ‘good’, Villeneuve will have succeeded. Film history proves how hard third installments are, for every Return of the King, there are dozens like The Dark Knight Rises and The Godfather Part III that fall short of expectations. Thus, by making a good Dune 3, Villeneuve will have beaten almost every film threequel in existence. So, Dune 3 doesn't need to be a masterpiece to succeed, it merely needs to be on the same level as Dune Two. Topping a film that is The Dark Knight or the Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy is hard but if Villeneuve can deliver a film that is at least on that level, he would have done something that is rarely possible in Hollywood.
