Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar franchise, has earned around $1.38 billion at the Avatar 3 box office worldwide so far. Avatar 3 Box Office: How Much Has ‘Fire and Ash’ Made?
The Avatar: Fire and Ash box office currently stands at around $1.38 billion worldwide. Even though this is a sizable total (by any stretch of imagination), the film’s diminishing week-on-week grosses mean that it is projected to close just around $1.45 billion total.
A haul of this magnitude makes Avatar 3 the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, but the Avatar: Fire and Ash box office is still significantly behind previous entries in the franchise. The last Avatar film, 2022’s The Way of Water, made around $2.3 billion worldwide when it released in theatres three years ago, and Fire and Ash’s total is projected to fall around 800 million short of its predecessor. Compared to the first Avatar’s 2.9 billion gross, the shortfall is more than 50 percent.
Why Avatar 3 Is Earning Less Than Previous Films
Everyone knew that each new Avatar installment would not be able to make 2 billion in theatres, and telling slightly tweaked variations of the same story would have an effect on the box office. However, Avatar 3 making almost 50 percent less than the first installment is cause for concern.
It seems audiences are not coming back to rewatch Avatar in droves the way they did for past installments, and there might be several different reasons for this. First, the novelty factor of Avatar is gone; the 2009 film Avatar was a unique cinematic experience that drew repeated viewings. Two sequels later, audiences might have had enough of Pandora. Two, the box office landscape is quite different today. Money is tight, and audiences are now picking and choosing what to spend their time and money on.

Will Disney Still Make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5?
All this is thus bad news for Avatar 4 and 5. James Cameron has previously stated multiple times that Avatar 3 needed to make truckloads of money for them to move on to the next one. Whether 1.5 billion is truckloads or not, the fact of the matter is these films are very expensive. Made on a budget of $380 million, the film will make a multiple of 3.9x when all is said and done. For any other franchise, this would be a stellar achievement, but for Avatar, this is slightly disappointing, to say the least.
So, there is a minuscule chance that the studio might not proceed with Avatar 4 at all. Cameron has a habit of shooting parts of future installments before their time, and he has already stated that he shot small segments of Avatar 4 during Avatar 2 and 3. Once sufficient time passes, preferably at the end of February 2026, Cameron and the Disney brass will get together to decide the future of the franchise. They might choose to proceed, or they might not.
If they decide to move forward, there is a slight chance Cameron might not direct the film. He has had too much on his plate anyway recently; he seeks to direct his upcoming Japan Atomic bomb film, he is writing a new Terminator, and he wants to get Alita: Battle Angel 2 off the ground as well.
If Disney decides against it, Cameron has a plan in this scenario as well. He has made it clear that he will either hold a press conference or write a book about what happens in Avatar 4 and 5 if the two films are not made.
In January 2026, Cameron stopped short of confirming whether Avatar 4 and 5 would officially happen, but he did state that Fire and Ash will need to succeed at the box office and added that he will need to figure out a way to make both sequels for a lesser budget, in order to get the approval from the studio. "The movie industry is depressed right now. Avatar 3 cost a lot of money. We have to do well in order to continue and we need to figure out how to make Avatar movies more inexpensively in order to continue [...] If we continue and we do 4, we also do 4 and 5 together”.
Avatar 4 and 5: Will James Cameron Continue the Franchise After Fire and Ash’s $1 Billion Box Office Run?
Why Avatar 4 Might Still Happen
Another factor working in favor of Avatar 4 is the fact that some parts of it were already shot several years ago. Cameron has a habit of doing this and hasn't divulged how much he has shot but it is said to be at least 10 to 20 percent of the film. Most of the scenes shot are related to the Sully children, whose actors are young and thus rapidly growing up in real life.
There is also the case of Michelle Yeoh, who has already been cast in Avatar 4. Initially linked to play a human scientist, Cameron has later clarified that she plays a Na'vi character by the name of Paktu’elat, and Yeoh has stated that she already shot most of her scenes in 2022. So there is already an element of sunk cost in Avatar 4 that the studio has to consider as well.
Whether $1.5 billion is enough for Disney to continue the franchise remains to be seen. Despite the drop compared to previous films, the Avatar: Fire and Ash box office still places it among the highest-grossing movies of the decade. With parts of Avatar 4 already filmed and James Cameron still deeply invested in the world of Pandora, the studio now faces a major decision.
If audiences truly are experiencing Avatar fatigue, the next chapter of Cameron’s ambitious saga could look very different from what was originally planned.
