Bullet Train 2: Will Brad Pitt Return for the Long-Awaited Sequel?

Bullet Train 2: Will Brad Pitt Return for the Long-Awaited Sequel?

Bullet Train 2 remains one of Sony’s most talked-about unannounced sequels, as fans continue to push for a return to David Leitch’s stylish action universe. While the 2022 hit Bullet Train proved that Leitch could deliver a high-energy action film that broke from genre convention, the studio has yet to officially confirm a follow-up. With strong streaming numbers, growing audience support, and renewed interest in Brad Pitt’s return as Ladybug, questions surrounding Bullet Train 2 continue to gain momentum.

Focusing on an American assassin named Ladybug (played to perfection by Brad Pitt), the film finds Ladybug embroiled in a peculiar situation aboard a high-speed Japanese bullet train as it barrels forward at 300 km/h. The fast-moving train has a plethora of killers onboard (in addition to Ladybug), and all of them are trying to find a single person of interest. As the conditions aboard the train deteriorate with each passing second, Ladybug has to navigate this tumultuous situation through sheer deception and wit as he struggles to stay alive in the face of overwhelming odds.

Brad Pitt rarely did action films before Bullet Train, so it was a bit of a shocker that he agreed to do it. Rumor has it that it all started on Leitch's previous movie, Deadpool 2, where Pitt agreed to do a one-second cameo (as a member of the X-Force) for a cup of coffee. Pitt loved working with Leitch and his team so much that he immediately said yes to his next film. In addition to Pitt, the film has an all-star cast composed of Sandra Bullock, Brian Tyree Henry, Joe King, Michael Shannon, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Let's not beat around the bush, the action genre has been quite cookie-cutter for quite some time, and was in desperate need of some new blood. Turns out, Leitch was just the guy to do this. First, he blew everyone away with John Wick (2014) and then made back-to-back stylish action features in the shape of Hobbs and Shaw and Deadpool 2. But all these would eventually lead to Bullet Train in 2022, which saw Leitch make his best action film yet. Bullet Train throws a quirky cast of killers onto an unstoppable train, where rising tensions and an ever-growing body count drive the chaos forward. What's not to love about this setup? Leitch fully utilizes the potential here and takes the story into some unexpected places with a couple of jaw dropping cameos to top it all off

What is even more shocking is that Bullet Train only cost $90 million to make, while we can swear it feels more like a $150 million feature, considering the cast and the set pieces involved. Produced by Sony, Bullet Train grossed close to $240 million at the global box office when it was released after the summer season in 2022, comfortably breaking even and even grossing some extra profit for the studio. The insane action comedy was a hit on streaming as well, generating high audience interest more than two years after its initial release date. In the realm of reviews, the film was rated 52% positive by Rotten Tomatoes but scored in the 90s by the audience.

Will Bullet Train 2 Happen?

It is clear that Leitch and company did not have a follow-up in mind when they made the first Bullet Train. This can be seen clearly through the fact that the film does not end on a cliffhanger or a tease for the sequel. However, it would be a shame if we did not revisit the adventures of Ladybug and the gang once more. There is a real potential to make another Bullet Train here, as the movie universe is too rich in fascinating characters to not revisit once more.

Even though Bullet Train made more than double its budget in theatres, Sony did not immediately greenlight a sequel (the way studios do when they have confidence in the property). Maybe Sony was hoping for a bit more money in theatres, or maybe they thought a sequel would cost more, and they did not want to front-run the sequel before locking deals with Pitt and the rest of the team. Whatever their reason, they have not officially greenlit a sequel yet. Audience interest remains high, with social media buzz suggesting strong demand for Bullet Train 2. Three years have now passed since the original film’s release, making timely action crucial if Sony wants to move the sequel forward.

Bullet Train 2 Cast — Who Could Return?

While there has been nothing official, rumors have been rife in the Twittersphere that Sony is indeed developing a Bullet Train sequel with several of the original cast members slated to return. Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock are slated to be back, and one of the new cast members to join the production is rumored to be Margot Robbie. Leitch plans to return for the sequel, but his packed schedule—along with Brad Pitt’s—makes locking in a release date difficult. Pitt already has several projects lined up, while Leitch’s next film arrives in September 2026. If Bullet Train 2moves forward, the earliest realistic release window would be 2028.

So, we are not entirely sure if Bullet Train 2 will happen. Social media is adamant that it is indeed on the way, while official sources have so far been mum on the prospect of it all. When it does become official, Sony will, of course, announce it themselves, and now, it becomes a waiting game to see if Sony will pull the trigger here. Fans continue to show strong enthusiasm for Bullet Train 2, and Sony would be wise to capitalize on that goodwill rather than let it fade.
