Fast & Furious 11: Why Universal Delayed the Final Movie and What’s Happening Now

Fast & Furious 11 has been delayed because Universal Pictures paused production following disappointing box office returns for Fast X and rising budget concerns. Originally planned as the second half of a two-part finale, the final Fast and Furious movie stalled as the studio reassessed escalating costs, star salaries, and the long-term viability of the franchise. Although Vin Diesel has since indicated that progress has resumed, Universal has yet to confirm an official release date, leaving the future of Fast X: Part 2 uncertain.

Beginning in 2001, the Fast and Furious franchise primarily revolves around the tale of street racers Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian (the late Paul Walker), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), and friends as they evolve from stealing DVD players to bigger and bigger heists. With global superstars such as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham joining the franchise later on, the Fast and Furious films have been on a roll; the 10-film saga and its one spinoff have grossed more than 7 billion dollars worldwide in theatrical receipts alone.

While the franchise hit a generational high with 2015’s Furious 7, things began to go downhill after the eighth film was released in 2017. Naturally, the franchise was not big enough to accommodate the collective egos of two of the world’s premier action stars, Dwayne Johnson and Diesel, who had a public feud on that film’s set. The feud spilled out into the open, leading to Johnson walking away from the franchise. Johnson had been a part of the franchise since Fast 5 (2011) and is a much bigger global star than Diesel; this prompted Universal to greenlight a Fast and Furious spinoff starring only Johnson to retain him.

While Vin Diesel had successfully protected his baby, he was running on fumes (creatively speaking). Each successive film now represented bigger and bigger setpieces with no logic, prompting derision and scorn among casual moviegoers. This was made apparent in the steadily declining box office sales. On the other end, Johson’s spinoff was a success but made nowhere near the amount of money the 7th and 8th films had made. While Johnson and Statham’s spinoff seemed like a one-and-done deal, Diesel and the gang returned for Fast 9 (2021) and Fast 10 (2023), which made even less cash than the aforementioned spinoff. Fast and Furious was in trouble, and all signs pointed to the fact that the franchise had overstayed its welcome.

Fast X’s Box Office Problems and Budget Fallout

With a budget approaching $400 million, Fast 10 had been touted as one of the most expensive blockbusters of all time. With its grosses barely climbing above $700 million, the film actually lost money, a feat unheard of for this three decade old franchise. Another major problem emerged when Fast X was designed as the first half of a two-part finale, ending on a cliffhanger meant to be resolved in the next film. Vin Diesel and the core cast pushed to move straight into the follow-up, which was billed as the final Fast & Furious movie. However, it was here that Universal stepped in to thwart Diesel’s plans.

Why Universal Delayed Fast & Furious 11

Universal was disappointed by the box office grosses of the last two movies and thus wanted budget cuts before proceeding. It was apparent that the star salaries, coupled with increasingly insane stunts, were ballooning the costs of these pictures to unsustainable heights. As the studio contemplated what to do next, stories were leaked to social media that Universal would pull the plug on the film if the budget and the stunts were not brought under control.

Is Fast X: Part 2 Still Happening?

The uncertainty around the film prompted Diesel to do damage control. Utilizing his massive social media presence, Diesel began to drop hints and clues that the film was still on track. At the same time, he commissioned Tyrese Gibson, one of the stars of the franchise, to plead with Universal to make the film, highlighting that this is what the fans wanted.

Late last year, Diesel went into overdrive, sharing a video of himself with Universal Pictures Chief Marketing Officer Michael Moses. During the video, Moses says that he and Diesel are “planning everything, and they’ve got it solved”. This seemingly confirms that the uncertainty swirling around Fast X: Part 2 has been solved, and Diesel and Universal have reached an agreement regarding the cost of the film. Diesel is also wearing a shirt that says "Fast X: Part 2 Los Angeles Production 2025," signifying that production had begun in 2025.

In December 2025, Diesel came forward to announce that football superstar Ronaldo would have a role in the film. He had also announced before that Paul Walker’s character would return in the film (how he aims to achieve this is unclear, probably a mix of digital scanning and the inclusion of Paul’s brothers). Conveniently, Dwayne Johnson has also returned to the franchise once more, after his attempt at taking over DC failed in 2022. Johnson made a cameo in 2023’s Fast X and is slated to be a part of the final installment as well. The rest of the cast will presumably make a comeback as well.

Fast & Furious 11 Release Date: What We Know

While Diesel continues to update everyone on the progress of the film, Universal has not locked in a release date yet. There have been rumors that the film will be released in April 2027, but nothing official has been set. The reasons for doing so are not immediately clear, but it seems the action and stunts will take a significant portion of the time.
